0805 SMD LEDs, Pre-Wired Lights and Assortment Kits

Choose the 0805 light source that actually ships

An 0805 SMD LED is a small surface-mount light-emitting diode, commonly around 2.0 × 1.25 mm (also called metric 2012). The package code describes physical size, not a universal forward voltage, brightness, viewing angle or power input. This assortment combines loose visible-color LEDs, soldered miniature railway and diorama lights, blinking and RGB devices, infrared emitters and receivers, side-emitting alternatives, sample books and a model-light control kit. Many product menus also offer 0201, 0402, 0603, 1206, 1210, 2835, 3528, 5050 or 5730 instead of 0805. Select the package, color, quantity and electrical construction from the actual variant rather than treating the full product headline as one supplied set.

Bare diode, pre-wired light or controller?

  • Bare 0805 LED: a tiny component intended for PCB mounting, offered in single-color, two-color, RGB, self-flashing, infrared and violet/near-UV variations. Unless its listing explicitly says otherwise, it has neither lead wires nor a built-in resistor. Check pad size, polarity and drive current against the selected part.
  • Pre-soldered micro LED: the emitting package is already joined to fine litz leads, often 20, 30 or 50 cm long. Products are sold in different 5/10/20/40/50/100-piece choices and in 0402, 0603, 0805 or 1206 variants. Some include an inline resistor for 12 V use; many others are simply described as 3 V pre-wired LEDs. A wire does not by itself provide current limiting.
  • Model-light system: a remote-controlled driver-board listing includes a board and seven wired light segments in its description. That kit is not a bare reel of 0805 diodes; check its specific power-input option, connectors, remote and package contents. A separate wired 0805 listing offers a CR2032 battery box explicitly without the cell. Do not assume batteries ship with either item.
  • Assortment or reel: single-color reels, five-color packs and sample books vary from tens of parts to thousands; a selected color such as “0805 red 3000pcs” means that color/package reel rather than an entire multicolor reel family. Other kits specify 5 colors × 20 pieces or 10 colors × 100 pieces. Verify the listed total and whether colors are mixed or individually selectable.

Mechanical footprint and emission direction

0805/2012 is conventionally a roughly 2.0 × 1.25 mm top-emitting footprint, but supplier packages, thickness and land-pattern recommendations can differ. An “0805 RGB” menu even names 1.6 × 1.5 mm and 2.0 × 1.2 mm forms. A distinct 0802/2106 side-emitting listing describes a roughly 2.1 × 0.6 mm package and sends light laterally rather than upward; it should not be substituted into a top-emitting 0805 footprint by name alone. Its menu contains red, white, yellow-green, orange, yellow, warm-white, blue and green side-emitting selections. Check optical axis, component height, pad geometry and reel orientation before designing a light pipe or front-panel indicator.

The 0201/0402/0603/0805/1206 numbering is not a brightness ladder. A smaller LED may fit behind a model window but be harder to solder or handle; a larger one may use a different footprint and thermal design. Color names such as green, yellow-green, jade-green and ice blue can represent different peak wavelengths and visual impressions. One specifically described emerald-green 0805 selection is listed at 520–530 nm, while a different side-emitter supplier gives its own per-color wavelengths. Those figures belong to those products only, not all green 0805 LEDs here.

Designing a suitable drive circuit

An ordinary LED needs controlled forward current. Forward voltage changes with emission chemistry, current and temperature. Red, amber or yellow variants often differ materially from blue, green, white and near-UV; a “3 V” phrase in a listing is not a universal LED supply specification. Decide the intended current from the selected component's data, supply tolerance and operating conditions, then use a suitable resistor or current-regulated driver. Verify the polarity mark and PCB footprint before soldering. Do not connect an unprotected bare LED straight across a battery, USB outlet or 12 V model bus because it happens to light briefly.

Pre-wired 3 V model LEDs and 12 V resistor-equipped assemblies must be kept separate. An Evemodel listing describes 10 pre-wired 0402/0603/0805 lights with approximately 50 cm leads and a pre-wired 1 kΩ resistor and rectifier for a stated 12–18 V AC/DC application. Another wired 0805 flashing listing describes a 1.5 kΩ resistor, approximately 20 cm leads and a stated 8–12 V AC/DC operating window. Neither specification carries over to the many 3 V wired products. Check whether a selected product actually includes its resistor and rectifier; “with resistance” and “pre-wired” do not mean the same thing. Lead color can indicate polarity on a given listing, but confirm its documentation instead of assuming all suppliers use the same convention.

For multiple lights, decide whether each unit is individually current-limited or belongs to a specified shared-driver system; LEDs with different colors or forward voltages should not be assumed to divide current evenly. If a model controller offers switching or effects, match its output rating, connectors and required supply to the actual LEDs. A miniature LED's 20 mA listing value, when present, is not proof that every component here can safely operate at 20 mA continuously. Review thermal conditions and any pulse-current rating separately.

Visible, bicolor, RGB and self-flashing are different devices

Single-color 0805 products offer red, orange, yellow, yellow-green, green, blue, ice blue, white, warm white, pink, purple and other options. Selecting a color from a menu ships that color, not a color-changing LED. One bicolor 1615-style listing offers combinations such as red/green, red/blue and red/yellow, while another bicolor listing names common dual-color combinations in nominal 0805-style packages. Determine the exact number of terminals, which dies share a lead, and whether the package is common-anode, common-cathode or antiparallel. Do not assume an ordinary two-terminal LED can display two independently controlled colors.

A separate RGB 0805 listing explicitly offers common-anode and common-cathode alternatives, including 20-piece and 1,000-piece selections. Those electrical topologies require different control arrangements and pin identification. RGB here does not automatically mean WS2812-style addressable digital pixels. Other “RGB flashing” listings describe an internal timing IC and fast versus slow flashing selections. Their self-changing sequence is not a three-channel externally programmable RGB driver. One self-flashing product states 3.3–5.0 V, whereas other blinking listings use 3 V wired assemblies; use the actual variant's operating guidance rather than extrapolating from the shared word “flashing.”

Infrared and near-ultraviolet options

There are 0805, 0603 and 1206 infrared listings whose selectable options distinguish Emitter from Receiver. A receiver is a photosensitive component, not an IR LED that illuminates a scene. Its bias and detection circuitry cannot be inferred from an emitter's forward-voltage listing. One 0805 IR emitter listing offers 850 nm and 940 nm options in a 20-piece quantity and states its own approximate electrical and optical figures; another lists 50 pieces. Choose wavelength for the specific detector, optical filter and application. Invisible IR can still pose eye-exposure risks, especially when multiple devices or optics are involved; do not judge safety by apparent brightness.

A distinct 200-piece purple/near-UV 0805 listing identifies approximately 395–400 nm emission, a roughly 2.0 × 1.2 mm package and its own forward-current/voltage claims. Purple, violet, “UV” and wavelength-labeled selections elsewhere are not guaranteed to have that same spectrum. These emitters are not proof of sterilization, curing performance, fluorescence excitation at every wavelength or any safety certification. Protect eyes and skin appropriately and check the intended optical application's actual wavelength and exposure requirements. The exact product's polarity markings and limits govern installation.

Ordering by quantity without surprises

Some supplier headings advertise “1 reel 4000/3000/2000 pcs,” with the count changing by selected package and color: 0402 or 0603, 0805 and 3528 options may not share a reel count. One 0805-specific reel is listed at 3,000 pieces. A mixed sample book offers “20 values each 25 pcs” or “20 values each 50 pcs,” making the delivered total dependent on the variant. A 1,200-piece assortment says 24 values × 50 in its description even though another line inconsistently says six colors × 50. Reconcile selected options and the package specification rather than repeating conflicting headline arithmetic as a guarantee. Similarly, a 390/50-piece kit or a title naming both 0805 and 5050 should not be interpreted as every package supplied in one bag unless that chosen assortment explicitly says so.

For production use, check whether the delivery is loose, tape/reel, sample booklet or pre-soldered lead assembly. A reel's tape pitch and orientation matter to pick-and-place equipment. For hand-building models, wire length, strand fineness, insulation, resistor position and solder-joint strain relief may matter more than the cost per diode. If matching an installed unit, confirm emitting direction, exact hue, light output at the target current, pad layout, case size and any built-in flashing logic rather than matching “0805” alone.

Selection checklist

  1. Identify the actual package in the variant: 0805 versus another SMD footprint, side-emitter, wired assembly or model-light kit.
  2. Choose optical type: a single visible color, warm/neutral white, bicolor, common-anode/cathode RGB, self-flashing RGB, IR emitter, IR receiver or near-UV LED. These are not interchangeable.
  3. Confirm the selected pack quantity and presentation, from small pre-wired sets to full reels or a multi-value sample book.
  4. For bare parts, check current, color-dependent forward voltage, polarity, footprint, viewing direction and current-limiting design. For pre-wired parts, establish whether a resistor and rectifier are actually installed and what supply range the supplier specifies.
  5. For a controller or model kit, inspect connector pitch, supply and included board, lights, remote and batteries; do not substitute a bare diode for an integrated kit.
  6. For IR and near-UV, match actual wavelength and optical safety requirements to the application. Certification, brightness and lifetime claims on one seller's listing are not collection-wide promises.

This guide describes the existing mixed assortment and does not change its product membership. The exact selected product variant and its documentation remain the authority for specifications, contents and use.
