0805 SMD Chip Resistors, Precision Values & Reels

0805 SMD chip resistors for assembly, repair and production

This collection centers on 0805 imperial surface-mount chip resistors for general PCB assembly, prototyping and repair. Their larger bodies and pads are generally easier to identify, hand-place and rework than 0603 or 0402 parts. Listings include single-value packs, 0R links, low-ohm values, precision selections, assortment books and production reels.

What does 0805 mean?

0805 is an imperial package designation with a nominal body around 0.08 × 0.05 inches, commonly called 2012 metric. It describes physical size only. It does not establish resistance, tolerance, wattage, voltage, TCR, pulse capability or material technology.

Products represented

  • Single-value packs: zero ohms, low-ohm values, standard E-series values and selected megohm ranges.
  • 0R jumpers: PCB links with finite resistance, current and power limits.
  • Low-ohm options: selected sub-ohm variants where pad and trace resistance may affect results.
  • Precision options: selected 0.1% listings, including specific products described as 25ppm.
  • Assortments: multi-value books and kits for prototyping and service inventory.
  • Bulk packs and reels: larger quantities for repeated builds and automated placement.

How to select

  1. Confirm package: match 0805 imperial / 2012 metric dimensions and the PCB land pattern.
  2. Choose resistance: read notation carefully. 4R7 means 4.7Ω, 1K2 means 1.2kΩ and 2M2 means 2.2MΩ.
  3. Set tolerance: choose 5%, 1%, 0.1% or another verified option from the circuit error budget.
  4. Calculate power: use P = I²R or P = V²/R and include thermal margin and derating.
  5. Check working voltage: a voltage limit can be reached before nominal power, especially at high resistance.
  6. Review TCR and stability: these matter in feedback, sensing, divider and precision analog circuits.
  7. Check pulse loading: surge, inrush and discharge applications require exact overload data.
  8. Verify packaging: confirm pieces per value, total quantity, cut tape, reel, filled kit or empty organizer.

0805 versus 0603

0805 generally offers larger pads and easier hand soldering, inspection and rework. It may have higher ratings within a specific component family, but size alone does not guarantee greater power or voltage capability. Substitution requires checking footprint, clearance and every electrical rating.

Precision and low-ohm boundaries

A 0.1% tolerance does not automatically guarantee 25ppm TCR, low noise, matched tracking, long-term stability or pulse performance. The 25ppm claim applies only where explicitly stated. For sub-ohm values, solder joints, traces and probe leads can materially affect measurement. Consider four-wire measurement or Kelvin routing where needed; a low resistance value alone does not prove that a part is designed for current sensing.

Power-rating boundary

Product listings contain conflicting 1/8W and 1/4W references. Neither rating applies to the whole collection. Confirm rated power, derating curve, working voltage, terminal temperature and PCB copper conditions for the exact product and resistance.

Mixed-package boundaries

Some listings or assortment books include 0201, 0402, 0603, 1206, 1210, 2010 or 2512 selections. Only variants explicitly identified as 0805 imperial / 2012 metric should be treated as 0805. Some sample-book options may be empty organizers containing no resistors.

Frequently asked questions

Are 0805 and 2012 the same size?

0805 imperial commonly corresponds to 2012 metric. Confirm actual dimensions to avoid confusing imperial and metric codes.

Is every 0805 resistor rated at 1/8W or 1/4W?

No. Both claims appear in listings, but the valid rating depends on the exact component and operating conditions.

Can 0805 replace 0603?

Not directly. Check the land pattern, board area and all electrical ratings first.

Does 0.1% tolerance guarantee 25ppm TCR?

No. Tolerance and TCR are separate specifications.

Is 0R a perfect short circuit?

No. A zero-ohm link has finite resistance and current, power and voltage limits.

Do all assortment books contain only 0805 resistors?

No. Some combine package sizes, and some selectable books are empty organizers.
