1206 SMD LEDs, RGB Chips and Replacement Bulbs

1206 LED selection begins with the actual assembly

A conventional single-color 1206 SMD LED is a surface-mount component in the approximately 3.2 × 1.6 mm (metric 3216) class. “1206” describes a package family, not an input voltage, brightness, color or completed lamp. This collection also includes 1204/3210 side-emitting RGB and built-in-IC LED parts, bicolor chips, loose IR LEDs, pre-wired model lights, T10 and BA9S pinball bulbs, 12/24 V vehicle lamps and kits containing other LED sizes. The selected product variant decides the actual package, optical function, electrical design, base and number of pieces delivered. A bare 1206 emitter is not a 6.3 V arcade bulb or a 24 V truck lamp.

What ships: component versus fitted light

  • Loose PCB-mount LEDs: selectable red, yellow, orange, yellow-green, green, blue, ice blue, white, warm white, pink, violet and UV-labeled 1206 choices, often sold by 50/100 pieces or in larger reels. These parts need a suitable PCB footprint and current-controlled drive.
  • Multicolor devices: red/blue, red/green and red/yellow-green bicolor offerings sit alongside common-anode and common-cathode RGB choices. A distinct WS2812-style side RGB part is described as having a built-in IC. Neither is the same as an ordinary two-terminal single-color diode.
  • Pre-soldered miniature lights: some model railway and diorama listings have 20–30 cm fine leads with 3 V wording and options for 0402/0603/0805/1206. Selecting 0805 means an 0805 wired light, not a 1206 loose emitter; leads alone do not guarantee a resistor.
  • Finished replacement bulbs: T10/W5W wedge, BA9S/T4W bayonet, BA15S/1156, BAY15D/1157, T20/7440/7443 and E10-base products contain arrays of SMD LEDs and additional circuitry. Their 6/6.3, 12 and 24 V applications, socket geometry, polarity and use cases are not interchangeable.
  • Assortment and reel: a single-color 1206 reel, five-color 100-piece pack or ten-color 1,000-piece box is determined by the selected option. Mixed package listings may supply 0402, 0603, 0805, 1210, 3528, 5050 or 5730 instead; the headline alone does not promise all formats in one kit.

Package fit and LED drive

A bare 1206/3216 LED commonly occupies a roughly 3.2 × 1.6 mm body, but height, contact layout, lens, emission direction and tape orientation vary. A listed ice-blue single-color option gives approximately 3.2 × 1.6 × 0.8 mm, whereas a separate white product's header and description conflict on a dimension. Confirm the actual manufacturer's drawing when designing a footprint. A 1204/3210 RGB option has an approximately 3.0 × 1.0 mm case in its detail and is not a drop-in 3216 substitute. A WS2812 side-emitting listing is marketed under both 1206 and 1204, with clear or diffused lens and 20- or 1,000-piece selections; verify its footprint, orientation and electrical timing from its exact specification before designing a board.

Ordinary LEDs are current-driven. Forward voltage varies with wavelength, current and temperature: one 1206 seller gives about 1.8–2.2 V for red/orange/yellow, about 2.0–2.4 V for yellow-green, about 2.8–3.2 V for green/blue and around 3.0–3.2 V for its white options. These are that listing's examples, not a single rating shared by this assortment. “3 V” in a title cannot define a safe supply for every red, blue or white diode. Use the selected component's datasheet or reliable supplier-specific electrical limits to establish operating current, supply tolerance and a current-limiting resistor or regulated driver; never connect a bare LED directly across an unverified 3, 6, 12 or 24 V source.

A listed 20 mA can describe a particular LED test or maximum condition, not a guaranteed best continuous current for every color and construction here. Component brightness in mcd depends on viewing angle and measurement conditions; it cannot be directly substituted for bulb lumens. PCB temperature, reflow profile, pad wetting and thermal management affect installed performance. For multiple emitters, verify series/parallel layout and limit current for each branch rather than assuming mismatched colors share current equally. A pre-wired 3 V LED should be inspected for its actual in-line components; a bare wire does not make it 12 V-ready.

Bicolor, analog RGB and addressable RGB are three categories

The 50-piece 1206 bicolor/RGB listing offers red-yellow-green, red-blue and red-green selections and separate RGB common-anode and common-cathode variants. A different 100-piece assortment has single colors, pairs and “RGB Common Anode” as separate menu choices. Verify the selected device's pin count, polarity, common connection, die-specific forward voltage and required output channels. RGB common-anode and common-cathode designs are not pin-compatible by default. A bicolor LED does not provide arbitrary full-color mixing merely because the product title also mentions RGB.

The 1204 RGB listing gives separate common-anode and common-cathode variants and its own 3.0 × 1.0 mm footprint. The WS2812-style side RGB part is identified as a 5 V built-in-IC emitter with clear/diffused choices. That is a digitally controlled integrated device, not an analog RGB LED with three independently driven color pins. Check the exact IC's protocol, data direction, power pins, logic levels and decoupling guidance. Neither a bare analog RGB diode nor a completed automobile bulb should be presumed WS2812-compatible. The numeral “1206” appearing in all three titles does not make their drive methods interchangeable.

Infrared, violet and white-temperature choices

A dedicated 1206 IR listing offers 850 nm or 940 nm versions, 50 pieces per selected wavelength according to its description. It provides listing-specific optical power and current figures; do not extend either value to other IR products. Invisible IR still requires appropriate eye-exposure assessment. A 395 nm UV-labeled option appears in a multicolor component listing, but its wavelength and radiation level must be verified for the selected part; it is not evidence of germicidal operation or a particular curing result. Protect eyes and skin when evaluating near-UV emitters.

“White” is not a fixed color temperature. This assortment includes warm white, cool white, a white diode listing described around 5000–8000 K, and other seller-specific white selections. Check the selected CCT, wavelength for colored emitters and brightness at the intended current when matching an existing indicator. A selected “RGB 100PCS” is not 100 white lamps; a five-color mix is not a selectable single-color 100-piece reel. Seller claims about long life, certification or universal brightness have not been verified across every listing and must not be applied as collection-wide specifications.

6 V and 6.3 V pinball or arcade replacement lamps

Several eight-SMD T10/W5W wedge and BA9S bayonet products target 6/6.3 V pinball machines, some described for AC or DC operation and “non-polar.” The chosen socket type matters even if both bulbs have eight 1206/3020 emitters. Another BA9S product offers an explicit “6V for Machine” versus “12V for Car” variant; those versions cannot share a supply merely because both have a BA9S base. Seller descriptions sometimes contain generic “12 V” fields while the chosen color says 6.3 V, so prioritize the detailed variant and confirm its actual input rating before ordering.

Pinball-machine features such as “non-ghosting” and “anti-flickering” refer to a particular bulb circuit and machine behavior, not to the bare diode. AC compatibility and non-polar input must be confirmed for that specific finished bulb. Even for a lamp advertised as anti-ghosting, lamp matrix scanning, residual currents, socket contacts and software vary by machine; no universal machine compatibility follows. Check socket, envelope clearance, supply waveform and intended color. A BA9S bayonet is not mechanically interchangeable with a T10 wedge, E10 screw or a 12 V vehicle bayonet.

12 V and 24 V vehicle bulbs

Automotive results include T10/W5W/194/168 wedge options at 12 or 24 V, 1156 BA15S single-contact and 1157 BAY15D dual-contact bayonet options, T20/7440/7443 types and 24 V truck bulbs. Select exact base and voltage in addition to LED count, color and pack size. A T10 listing offers 20, 42 or 68 SMD emitters and separate 12/24 V variants; another offers 9 or 12 emitters in a two-piece pack. Those numbers describe the finished bulb's LED array, not the number of bulbs. A 24 V 1156/1157 product differentiates base and yellow/red/cold-white options. 1156 and 1157 should not be treated as equivalent just because both fit a family of round bayonet lamps.

For dual-intensity brake/tail or turn-signal installations, match the original socket contacts, indexing pins, wiring behavior and vehicle electrical system. “Universal,” “CANbus,” “no error,” “plug and play,” model names and a list of cross-reference bulbs in seller copy do not establish compatibility with every vehicle or legal acceptability in every lamp position. Some replacement LEDs are polarity-sensitive; others incorporate non-polar circuitry. Confirm lens clearance, beam pattern, required color and local road-lighting regulations. An LED turn-signal replacement can change load detection or flash behavior and may require application-specific assessment; do not assume a generic bulb corrects it. Bulb wattage and brightness claims in one listing cannot be copied to another T10, BA9S or T20 choice.

Order accurately by pack, base and option

Reels and kits span 50, 100, 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000 pieces in different listings, while automobile and arcade bulbs have 1/2/4/10/20/50/100-piece choices. Some headlines show a promotional high quantity yet the variant selector presents only color and voltage; check the particular listing's package detail before treating the headline as a guaranteed count. A 100-piece LED menu gives distinct “100 pcs yellow” versus “5 colors each 20 pcs” choices. A 1,000-piece ten-color kit describes ten colors × 100; it is not a thousand of each color. “Ships From” describes dispatch location, not chip dimensions or electrical function.

Pre-order checklist

  1. Identify whether the selection is a bare 1206 diode, pre-wired LED, multicolor/side-emitting package, integrated pixel, completed bulb or mixed kit.
  2. For PCB design check 3216 versus 3210 or other footprint, pad/polarity, emission direction, pinout, current, color/wavelength and actual LED count per pack.
  3. For a finished lamp match 6/6.3, 12 or 24 V, AC/DC requirements, T10 versus BA9S versus BA15S/BAY15D/T20/E10 base, bulb quantity and physical fit.
  4. Separate “number of SMD emitters per bulb” from “number of bulbs shipped.” Match warm/cool white or visible color to the real application.
  5. Check IR/near-UV safety, controller protocol for an integrated RGB pixel, and supplier-specific compatibility or certification claims instead of treating a common 1206 name as a guarantee.

The selected variant and its supporting technical documentation determine what arrives and what it can safely replace. This guide explains the existing mixed catalog without removing or reclassifying any products.
