1206 SMD Chip Resistors, Low-Ohm Values & Kits

1206 SMD resistors for higher-dissipation layouts, prototyping and repair

This collection focuses on 1206 imperial surface-mount resistors, commonly known as 3216 metric. The larger package offers generous pads for hand assembly and inspection and may support higher dissipation than smaller formats within a comparable component family. Products include single-value fixed resistors, 0R links, sub-ohm alloy options, precision values, sample books and full reels. Exact electrical ratings remain product-specific.

What is a 1206 resistor?

1206 is an imperial size code with a nominal body around 0.12 × 0.06 inches, commonly corresponding to 3216 metric. It describes dimensions, not resistance, wattage, voltage, tolerance, TCR, pulse capability or construction. Do not confuse 1206 imperial with a different metric size code.

Products represented

  • General-purpose chip resistors: single-value packs and reels from 0R through ohm, kilohm and megohm ranges.
  • Low-ohm and alloy options: selected milliohm and sub-ohm values for designs requiring verified current, power and terminal-performance data.
  • Precision options: selected 0.1% products, including specific 25ppm and 50ppm listings.
  • Assortment kits: multi-value packs, sample books and mixed-package sets.
  • Networks and specialized components: selected resistor arrays, MELF resistors and non-resistor parts that share 1206 or 3216 size language.

How to select

  1. Confirm package and construction: verify 1206 imperial / 3216 metric, land pattern, thick-film, alloy, MELF or array format.
  2. Select resistance: interpret codes carefully. R010 means 0.01Ω, 4R7 means 4.7Ω, 2K2 means 2.2kΩ and 1M means 1MΩ.
  3. Choose tolerance and TCR: initial accuracy and temperature drift are separate specifications.
  4. Calculate dissipation: use P = I²R or P = V²/R and apply the exact derating curve.
  5. Check voltage: working and overload voltage can limit a part before nominal power does.
  6. Review surge requirements: pulse energy, inrush and fault loading require verified product data.
  7. For low-ohm values: account for pads, traces and solder joints; use Kelvin routing or four-wire measurement when required.
  8. Confirm quantity: distinguish single-value packs, assortments, cut tape, full reels, filled books and empty organizers.

1206 versus 0805

1206 uses more PCB area but is generally easier to handle and can provide improved thermal spreading. It is not automatically a drop-in higher-power replacement for 0805. Footprint, clearance, voltage, resistance technology, terminal temperature and manufacturer derating must all be checked.

Power-rating boundaries

Listings contain conflicting claims including 1/16W, 1/4W, 1/2W and 1W. These ratings belong only to the exact products and constructions stated. A standard thick-film part, a low-ohm alloy resistor and a cylindrical MELF device can share 1206-related size language while having very different behavior.

Specialized-product boundaries

This collection also contains NTC thermistors, resistor networks and ferrite beads. An NTC changes resistance with temperature and is not a fixed resistor. A resistor array contains multiple elements and requires the correct pin configuration. A ferrite bead is an impedance-suppression component; its ohmic-looking value may describe impedance at a test frequency, not DC resistance. These parts must be selected from their own datasheets.

Mixed-listing boundaries

Some kits combine 0201, 0402, 0603, 0805, 1206, 1210 or 2512 options. Only variants explicitly marked 1206 imperial / 3216 metric belong to this size. Some listings include blank sample books with no components. High-megohm, precision, alloy and branded-component claims apply only to the listed product or variant and not to the collection as a whole.

Frequently asked questions

Does 1206 mean 3216 metric?

1206 imperial commonly corresponds to 3216 metric. Confirm actual dimensions before ordering.

Is every 1206 resistor rated at 1/4W?

No. Listings show several ratings, and the valid value depends on construction and operating conditions.

Is every low-ohm 1206 part a current-sense resistor?

No. Verify tolerance, TCR, power, terminal structure, overload data and layout requirements.

Does 0.1% tolerance guarantee 25ppm TCR?

No. Tolerance and temperature coefficient are independent specifications.

Are 1206 ferrite beads resistors?

No. Ferrite beads suppress high-frequency noise and require impedance, current and DC-resistance data.

Do all sample books contain only 1206 parts?

No. Some mix packages, and some options are empty organizers.
