AD9361 SDR Transceiver ICs, RF Boards and FPGA Platforms
AD9361 software-defined radio components and platforms
Shop AD9361-related SDR parts for RF development, signal capture and transceiver prototyping. The actual assortment ranges from loose AD9361BBCZ BGA chips and AD-FMCOMMS3-style RF daughterboards to Zynq/Artix-based USB or Ethernet SDRs, multi-channel receive systems and supporting FPGA host boards. Product pages also offer AD9362/AD9363/AD9364/AD9365 silicon, AD9363-populated SDRs, shells, antenna sets, accessory bags and host-only boards. Choose the selected variant, not an AD9361 keyword in the product title: a “Case Not PCB” option is not an SDR, and an AD9363 version is not automatically an AD9361 version.
Which type of AD9361 product fits your project?
- Bare RF transceiver IC: select AD9361BBCZ explicitly from BGA chip listings that also offer AD9362BBCZ/ABCZ, AD9363BBCZ/ABCZ, AD9364BBCZ and AD9365BBCZ. A bare BGA device requires a designed host digital interface, clocks, RF matching/filtering, multiple power rails, thermal/assembly control and software. It does not include an FPGA, antennas, USB connection or a prebuilt RF chain. Other “AD9361BBCZ” single-part pages may list one piece with a default variant; confirm exact markings and authenticity/documentation before design-in.
- RF daughterboards: AD-FMCOMMS3-EBZ-style AD9361 FMC boards are intended for a suitable FPGA/FMC host, not a standalone USB radio. AD-FMCOMMS5-EBZ-style dual-AD9361 evaluation boards target multiple coherent RF paths and similarly require compatible host hardware. A ZedBoard+FMCOMMS3 bundle differs from the daughterboard-only variant and from a ZedBoard motherboard-only choice. Verify FMC connector/pinout, HDL and power requirements for the actual card.
- Pluto/Zynq-family integrated SDRs: 7020-SDR, P210, E200, E310 and related XC7Z020-based boards combine an RF transceiver and host processing hardware on selected versions. Several show AD9361 or AD9363 variants; some 7020+AD9361 offerings mention an added PA, Ethernet or fan. These additions are properties of particular assembled boards, not features of every AD9361 chip. A vendor's “Pluto compatible,” “OpenWiFi” or “MATLAB” wording is a software-development claim for its specific hardware/firmware and is not proof of official hardware identity or plug-and-play support in every environment.
- USB SDR / B210-inspired platforms: B200/B210, B210 mini/B220 mini, U200/U220, bladeRF 2.0 and XC7A100T/XC7A200T boards expose different FPGA, RF, USB and software combinations. One LibreSDR page identifies its B210 mini as XC7A100T+AD9363 and B220 mini as XC7A200T+AD9361; another similarly named page states XC7A100T+AD9361. These listing-level differences must be resolved at the selected variant and board revision rather than assuming a universal B210 mini bill of materials. “Alternative to HackRF,” “USRP compatible” and “UHD support” are seller descriptions, not proof that software images, bitstreams, host drivers, sample rates or RF performance are interchangeable.
- Multichannel and specialist systems: SDR-1T8R options describe a Zynq platform using multiple AD936x RF ICs for 1TX/8RX or related configurations; do not infer one AD9361 alone provides eight independent receiver chains. Some E316 listings offer E316-AD9361 versus E316-AD9363; some XCKU5P development kits bundle a separate AD9361 RF module. Verify actual number of populated RF devices, synchronized clocks and data throughput when selecting phase-coherent or multi-channel acquisition equipment.
- Host boards and accessories only: RK-ZYNQ7020-F FMC boards support an AD9361 daughter card but are not necessarily populated with the daughter card. Variants reading “Case Not PCB,” “shell,” “accessory bag,” “antenna,” “BT100,” “BT200” or “accessories” should not be mistaken for complete radios. Some listings distinguish “board,” “board With alu.shell,” or a board with cooling fan; check antenna count, cables, PSU, enclosure and whether the RF daughterboard is included.
AD9361 versus AD9363 and neighboring part numbers
AD9361 is a highly integrated RF transceiver used for transmit and receive chains in wideband SDR designs, commonly advertised on assembled boards for 70 MHz–6 GHz tuning and configurable bandwidth up to 56 MHz. Those figures must be validated against the selected chip, board RF path, firmware and test configuration. A product describing AD9363 as “configured as AD9361” does not establish that AD9363 is an identical, officially specified AD9361 device or that a wider advertised tuning range is guaranteed for the shipped board. AD9362/AD9364/AD9365 and AD9363 are distinct parts with different capabilities, channels, packaging or qualification; check the manufacturer's datasheet and board design for the exact suffix. Even where device drivers expose similar interfaces, the populated RF part and calibration behavior matter.
Likewise, “70 MHz–6 GHz” on an SDR headline is not a promise of equal transmit output, noise figure, filter response or legally permissible use throughout that range. Board-level matching networks, baluns, filters, PA stages, RF switches and clock paths can restrict performance, while a seller's 1 MHz–6 GHz or 47 MHz–6 GHz coverage claim may describe a different design or modification. Treat each board's measured RF specifications, frequency limits and bandwidth claims separately. The maximum analog/channel bandwidth is not identical to sustained host throughput or simultaneous multi-channel streaming throughput.
FPGA, clocks and sample transport
An SDR system is more than its RF chip. AD9361-compatible daughterboards require a correctly mapped FPGA interface, reference clock, configuration/control interface and a supported HDL/firmware stack. Integrated boards may use Zynq XC7Z020, Artix XC7A100T/XC7A200T, Kintex/Virtex-class logic or another platform; the chosen FPGA determines available fabric, external memory and supported bitstreams. Confirm whether “2R2T,” “1TX8RX,” “MIMO” and phase synchronization refer to independently exposed streams, how channels share clock/reference inputs, and whether host USB 3.0, Gigabit Ethernet or a local storage path can sustain the requested sample rate and format.
For coherent operation, check shared reference distribution, synchronization trigger/PPS capability, sample-clock phase behavior, RF calibration and any inter-board wiring. Merely placing multiple AD9361 chips on a board does not by itself guarantee phase-coherent capture at power-up across all paths. Conversely, an AD-FMCOMMS3 daughterboard is not automatically a multi-board phase-sync platform without appropriate host design. Verify connector pinouts and supported reference/trigger ports before ordering accessories.
Software claims require exact board support
Listings reference GNU Radio, SDRangel, MATLAB, DragonOS, OpenWiFi, Open5G-PHY, OAI, Pluto SDR tools and UHD. These are different host ecosystems, not universal firmware preinstalled on every SDR. A compatible application may require a particular USB VID/PID, FPGA image, vendor driver, Linux kernel/IIO device tree, custom gateware or a seller-provided image. “USRP B210-compatible” or “Pluto replacement” should be validated against the selected board's documented hardware revision and current software package. One B210 mini listing explicitly describes swapping a binary file for compatibility, which is not equivalent to an official B210. Verify available build files, boot method, recovery path and host operating system before planning a deployment.
For receive-only projects, verify whether the selected hardware provides transmit circuitry at all: a “radio receiver” title and a “wireless function: no” taxonomy field can coexist with an SDR transceiver description. The actual board schematic and model take precedence. Do not assume that a case, FPGA host, antenna accessory or RF daughterboard can operate as a complete receive/transmit system without its missing counterpart.
Power, RF safety and realistic engineering limits
A bare AD9361 BGA requires multiple specified supply rails; a populated E200/E310-style board may instead list a 5 V / 2 A system input, and a different FPGA host bundle can include a 12 V 3 A adapter. Never apply a finished board's external input rating to the bare RF chip or daughterboard. Confirm power connector polarity, regulator thermal load, USB current limits, PA transmit-current peaks and heatsinking for the selected assembly. A “with PA” professional board differs in RF output path and power from its non-PA sibling. Verify gain, filtering, antenna match and permissible transmit frequencies and EIRP before enabling transmission.
Transmit operation is subject to local spectrum licensing and interference rules; broad SDR tuning capability is not authorization to transmit on any frequency. Avoid assuming that a board advertised for OpenWiFi, cellular experiments, satellite reception or “drone detection” is legally suitable or functionally complete for those applications without the correct firmware, antenna, RF filtering and permissions. A seller label of “certification: NONE” on one listing does not establish a collection-wide certification status, while another seller's compatibility or origin claim does not establish an official Analog Devices or Ettus manufacturing relationship.
Variant-by-variant traps in this assortment
- E200 variants include E200-AD9361, E200-AD9363 and Case Not PCB; only the selected populated radio board provides the SDR electronics.
- E310 and E316 pages can offer separate AD9361 and AD9363 hardware. “E310-AD9363” is not an AD9361 purchase despite an AD9361 headline.
- A U200 item titled “with AD9361” shows U200-AD9363 as its visible option. Verify the shipped silicon rather than relying on that title.
- 7020-SDR R1-9361 versus R1-9363 and the professional 9361 versus 9363 variants change the RF device. A PA claim belongs to the professional board version, not every R1 or Pluto-style board.
- B210 mini versus B220 mini, B200 versus B210, and 75T versus 200T are distinct selected FPGA/radio platform configurations. Some “B210 Small” pages offer A = main board, B = accessory bag and C = CNC shell; other pages spell out main board, shell and bag separately.
- One ZedBoard listing offers type 1 through type 6 covering different motherboard/daughterboard combinations and origin descriptions; the type number, not the umbrella product title, governs included boards.
- BladeRF-themed pages list XA4/XA9 alongside antenna and BT100/BT200 accessories. An antenna variant does not contain a bladeRF 2.0 device.
- AD9361BBCZ chip listings mix AD9362, AD9363, AD9364 and AD9365 variants. BGA chip quantity is not a bundle of every model in the title.
Technical buying checklist
- Delivery level: BGA IC, FMC daughtercard, FPGA host only, integrated SDR, complete multi-radio system or accessory? Confirm the exact selected option.
- RF device and architecture: AD9361 versus AD9363/other AD936x; number of independent transmit/receive paths, front-end filters, optional PA and antenna connectors.
- Digital host: FPGA/SoC part number, interface to RF card, RAM/storage, USB/Ethernet bandwidth, reference clock and synchronization inputs.
- Software path: verified OS drivers, device tree, FPGA gateware, firmware image and application compatibility for that board revision, not just a familiar SDR acronym.
- Package contents: motherboard, RF daughterboard, antennas, RF cables, enclosure, accessory bag, power supply and cooling can be separate options.
- Deployment limits: actual RF tuning/bandwidth and sample-stream performance, supply requirements, thermal management and legally permitted transmission.
Frequently asked questions
Does “AD9361 SDR” always mean a complete software radio? No. It may be a BGA IC, FMC RF daughterboard, FPGA board, finished USB SDR or accessory-only listing. Read the selected variant and included parts.
Can I use an AD9363 option as though it were AD9361? Do not assume so. Confirm the RF part's official specifications, board RF path and firmware support; a seller-described reconfiguration is not an AD9361 specification guarantee.
Is every B210 mini or Pluto-style board officially manufactured or drop-in compatible? No such blanket claim is established here. Check vendor documentation, exact FPGA, RF silicon, drivers and firmware for the chosen revision.
Will a daughterboard run by itself? An FMC AD-FMCOMMS3/5-style card normally requires a suitable host board, power and HDL/software stack. Confirm whether the listing is a card-only or combined bundle.
Is 70 MHz–6 GHz a guaranteed usable transmit range? No. It is an advertised range on particular AD9361-equipped products; board RF design, calibration, filtering, measured performance and local radio rules govern actual use.
For critical RF projects, validate the precise shipped silicon, schematic, FPGA image, software release and measured RF data before committing to an integration or production design.
