AM335x Processor ICs, BeagleBone Boards & Alternatives

AM335x embedded processors and development boards: know what you are selecting

This collection includes Texas Instruments AM335x-family processor IC listings and BeagleBone-class development boards, alongside a newer AM62L32 evaluation platform and unrelated desktop computing items. The meaningful purchasing distinction is bare application processor versus populated development board versus a different architecture entirely. A board listing's family name does not guarantee the same processor suffix, peripheral population, wireless hardware, included accessories or software image on every selected option.

AM335x-family items in the collection

  • Loose processor ICs: AM3354BZCZA100 and AM3352BZCZD80 appear as individually listed electronic components. These full ordering codes identify different AM335x devices; the brief seller descriptions do not establish that the two have identical peripheral sets, speed grade, package, temperature rating or pinout. They are bare chips, not BeagleBone boards, not preloaded Linux systems and not plug-in replacements for a desktop CPU. Check the manufacturer's ordering guide, datasheet, package drawing and silicon revision before committing a footprint or board design.
  • BeagleBone Black Rev.C listings: development-board listings describe AM335x/AM3358-class Arm Cortex-A8 hardware with onboard DDR memory, eMMC, Ethernet, USB and expansion headers. These are assembled boards intended for software and interface evaluation, not loose AM3352 or AM3354 ICs. The imported descriptions mention capabilities including HDMI, microSD boot and debug connections, but confirm actual port population, board revision, included cable/power supply and available supported image on the chosen product before ordering. A “clearance” label describes a commercial listing, not a verified electrical or functional grade.
  • Black, Green and Wireless choices: two multi-option listings use a field called Color to select BeagleBone Black, BeagleBone Green or BeagleBone Wireless. Those are different physical board configurations, not a chassis color. The Green listing mentions Grove connectors; the Wireless description discusses Wi-Fi/BLE, while the Black description discusses HDMI and wired Ethernet. Never assume all of those interfaces are fitted to every board, or that a cape and image tested on one variant works unchanged on another.
  • An additional LCPI V3s option: one multi-option listing also includes an LCPI V3s choice. Its name refers to a different platform; a shared product page does not turn it into an AM335x board. Verify the selected board's actual processor and software separately.
  • AM62L32 evaluation boards: listings describe a TL62Lx-MiniEVM based on AM62L32 dual Cortex-A53 processing, with S (512MB/256MB NAND) and A (512MB/4GB eMMC) options. These storage configurations are alternatives, not combined contents. The phrase “AM335x upgrade” indicates a potential redesign direction, not pin, software-image, peripheral or cape compatibility with AM335x. Validate actual CAN-FD, time-sensitive networking and other advertised interfaces on the precise board, schematic and software release rather than treating generic seller claims as guaranteed features.

Products here that are not AM335x hardware

AMD FX-6100 and FX-8320 desktop processors use Socket AM3+; Ryzen 7 7700, Ryzen 5 7500F and Ryzen 5 8500G are Socket AM5 desktop CPUs. Despite the shared letters “AM,” these have no AM335x architectural or physical relationship. The Z-1300 tower CPU cooler is for listed desktop sockets, not a BeagleBone thermal solution. Some of those CPU listings say used, and seller descriptions contain internally inconsistent specifications such as unlocked status or core/thread counts; check the exact desktop part number and condition independently. None of these desktop items should be interpreted as an AM335x alternative for an embedded PCB.

Selection checklist for engineering and procurement

  1. Define the unit of purchase: confirm whether you need a bare IC, an assembled BeagleBone board, an AM62L32 evaluation board or a desktop component. A chip-only item requires memory, power sequencing, boot storage, clocking, high-density PCB routing and assembly. A board may include some of these but not necessarily a power supply, enclosure, cape or SD card.
  2. Use the exact ordering code: compare AM3352 and AM3354 suffixes for package, speed, operating range, peripherals and pin mapping. The AM335x family label alone is too broad to qualify a substitute. For board purchases, verify the installed device and board revision rather than inferring the chip from the listing headline.
  3. Map board interfaces to the application: check header pinout, GPIO voltage, ADC input limits, UART/I2C/SPI, Ethernet PHY, USB host/device roles, display output and access to the programmable real-time unit on the exact board. A SoC datasheet capability is not proof that the signal is routed, fitted or supported by the board's firmware.
  4. Match boot and software: inspect onboard eMMC or NAND, microSD support, boot-mode controls, Linux distribution image, kernel/device tree and peripheral-driver availability. The AM62L32 board's Arm Cortex-A53 software stack is not an AM335x Cortex-A8 image; a Black image should not be assumed to enable Green/Wireless-specific functions without checking the board support package.
  5. Check variant contents and claims: Package, Color and Model Number may mean entirely different boards or memory/storage combinations. Read the selected option at checkout. Descriptions that call a board a “voltage regulator,” promise broad industrial suitability or mention certification without device-specific evidence should not be treated as verified specifications for the collection.

Frequently asked questions

Does an AM3352 or AM3354 IC come with a BeagleBone board? No. Those listings identify loose processor components; select a development-board listing for a populated board.

Is BeagleBone Green the same as BeagleBone Black or Wireless? No. Their connector populations and connectivity differ. Select the named board option, then verify its specific schematic and software image.

Does the LCPI V3s choice use AM335x? Do not assume so. It is a separately named platform within one multi-option listing; check the exact selected board before ordering.

Is AM62L32 a drop-in AM335x upgrade? No such compatibility is established. Treat it as a separate design platform requiring review of processor architecture, footprint, power, memory, interface routing and software migration.

Can an AMD FX or Ryzen processor replace an AM335x chip? No. Those are desktop CPUs with unrelated sockets and platform requirements. The desktop cooler is likewise not an AM335x processor.

Are power, cables, capes and boot media included? Only when the specific selected listing explicitly includes them. Check board condition, kit contents and software support before purchase.

For production decisions, use the manufacturer's current datasheet, reference design and board documentation for the exact part and revision. This collection guide helps classify the listings; it does not confer compatibility, authenticity, regulatory certification or application approval.
