AVR Microcontrollers, Development Boards & ISP Programmers

AVR microcontroller ICs, boards and ISP programming tools

Compare ATtiny and ATmega AVR chips with development boards and programming hardware. This collection currently includes ATtiny13A and ATtiny85 ICs; ATmega8A, ATmega128A, ATmega328P/328PB, ATmega32U4 and ATmega2560 options; Pro Micro, Nano-style, MEGA2560, ATmega128 and Digispark-style boards; and USBasp/USBtinyISP programmers. It also contains empty PCBs, peripheral modules and non-AVR STM32, GD32, CH32, PIC or 8051-family products. A product appearing here is not automatically an AVR controller: check its selected option and included contents.

Choose by exact MCU and package

  • ATtiny: ATtiny13A-PU DIP-8 versus ATtiny13A-SSU SOIC-8, and ATtiny85-20PU DIP-8 versus ATtiny85-20SU SOP-8, require different footprints. Compare program memory, SRAM, EEPROM, ADC/timers, usable GPIO, voltage and clock limits for the exact suffix. A maximum clock figure is not guaranteed at every supply voltage; ATtiny13A and ATtiny85 are not firmware-equivalent.
  • ATmega: Listings include ATmega8A-AU TQFP-32, ATmega128A-AU TQFP-64, and ATmega328P-PU DIP-28 versus ATmega328P-AU TQFP-32. Also compare ATmega16L-8AU, ATmega644PA-AU and ATmega32U4-AU by flash/RAM, serial interfaces, timers, ADC, voltage/speed grade and pin mapping. ATmega328PB-AU is a distinct device from ATmega328P-AU; do not infer identical peripherals, pin functions, bootloader or firmware support from the shared name.
  • USB and board choices: ATmega32U4 Pro Micro and Teensy-style listings should be evaluated by fitted MCU, USB circuitry, bootloader, pin map and board revision. Many ATmega328P Nano-style boards instead use a separate USB-to-UART bridge; a USB connector does not make their MCU native-USB. Nano Every listings name ATmega4809, a different MCU from ATmega328P. Verify board schematic, programming method and software support.

Development boards versus programmers

Pro Micro variants specify Micro USB, Mini USB or Type-C connectors; that selection is not proof of the same PCB revision or bootloader. Nano, UNO and MEGA2560 boards can differ in fitted MCU, CH340 or other USB-serial bridge, header population and included cable. ATmega128 and 51/AVR learning boards may be assembled boards or component choices. An ATmega8/48/88 minimum-system PCB labeled “NO Chip” is not a populated controller. Match the exact selected board's MCU marking, oscillator, reset circuitry, voltage domain, exposed pins and package contents to your project.

USBasp and USBtinyISP are AVR ISP programmers, not target boards. Check the selected MCU's supported programming interface, ISP header pinout, target logic voltage, clock configuration, host driver and tool software. A JTAG-labeled tool is not automatically interchangeable with ISP, and a PIC K150 programmer targets a different ecosystem. If a board uploads through a bootloader over USB or UART, verify whether a separate ISP programmer is needed. “For Arduino” does not establish official hardware, an installed bootloader or universal IDE support.

Selected variants and compatible peripherals

Fields called “Color” or “Model Number” may actually encode chip model, DIP versus SMD package, 1/5/10/30/50/100-piece pack, USB connector or assembled-board configuration. Several models in a headline commonly mean alternatives, not a mixed set. ADXL345 sensors, PCF8574 expanders, TM1638 displays, relays and radio breakouts need a suitable host; verify power, I/O logic level, interface, library and connector pinout. Do not generalize seller claims of authenticity, ratings or compatibility across variants; use the exact device datasheet and board schematic where specifications conflict.

Frequently asked questions

Are ATmega328P-PU and ATmega328P-AU physically interchangeable? No. DIP-28 and TQFP-32 require different PCB footprints; review pin mapping and full suffix.

Can ATmega328PB replace ATmega328P without changes? Not as a blanket rule. Check its datasheet, peripherals, toolchain and your existing firmware and board design.

Does Nano Every mean an ATmega328P Nano? No. Listings name ATmega4809. Verify board pins and code compatibility separately.

Does an AVR programmer include a target chip or board? Only if the chosen variant explicitly lists them. A programmer, bare IC, empty PCB and populated board are different purchases.

Is every item in this collection an AVR part? No. Some are other MCU families or peripherals. Identify the exact chip and function on each listing before ordering.
