Bridge Rectifiers and Three-Phase Diode Modules
Bridge rectifiers combine diodes into a defined AC-to-DC rectification arrangement. This collection primarily includes compact four-terminal single-phase bridges, square metal-case bridges and larger three-phase rectifier modules. It also includes generator rectifier service kits and some loose diodes or unrelated options inside mixed supplier listings. Check the selected model and package: the word “bridge” in a listing title does not make every option a complete bridge.
What you can compare here
- Compact single-phase bridges: MB6S, MB10S, DB and small W-series packages, and through-hole KBP, KBL, KBU, GBU and GBJ styles appear as individual parts or multipacks. Compare their four-terminal AC/DC arrangement, footprint, lead spacing, case style and the exact model's current and reverse-voltage grades; similar-looking packages are not automatically pin-compatible.
- Square bridge blocks: KBPC and GBPC-labelled listings include 10, 15, 25, 35 and 50 A model selections and various voltage suffixes. Some options have blade terminals, wire leads or mounting-hole differences. The current printed in a title is not a guarantee at every ambient temperature: verify the datasheet's case-temperature and heatsink conditions, surge rating, mounting method and terminal polarity. A heatsink is included only when the chosen option explicitly says so.
- Three-phase power modules: MDS and SQL-type listings mix current grades, module cases and voltage suffixes. Check whether the exact option is a three-phase bridge, a single-phase bridge, a diode module or another assembly; then match its phase count, AC inputs, positive/negative outputs, insulation and cooling requirements. Never transfer a headline 1600 V or 150 A claim to every variant.
- Generator replacement parts: RSK and LSA service listings can offer a complete wheel/plate or kit, diode pair, set of diodes or varistor as separate choices. Match the equipment's service documentation and original assembly number, polarity, mounting and the exact selected contents. A varistor handles overvoltage transients and is not a rectifier bridge.
- Mixed diode listings: SR540/SR560/SR5100/SR5200 options are individual Schottky rectifiers, not four-diode bridges. Other listings can contain single rectifier diodes, modules or accessory choices. Confirm the selected option before treating a listing as an AC input bridge.
How to choose a bridge rectifier
- Identify the topology first: a four-diode single-phase bridge, a six-pulse three-phase bridge, one loose diode, or an equipment-specific rectifier assembly.
- Set repetitive peak reverse-voltage headroom for the actual source and transients. Check average rectified current under your waveform and the allowed surge current; a headline amp rating depends on thermal conditions.
- Estimate diode conduction loss using the selected device's forward-voltage data and provide the documented thermal path. Verify case temperature, mounting surface, insulation requirements and whether a heatsink or forced cooling is needed.
- Match the package and exact terminal map, including the two AC markings and positive/negative DC markings on a single-phase bridge, or the documented terminals of a three-phase module. Follow the manufacturer's application guidance for line-connected or high-energy equipment.
- Select the exact model and quantity. Supplier menus labelled “Color” may actually choose current grade, voltage suffix, package contents or 1/2/5/10/50-piece packs; do not assume every option shares the title's rating or comes with a heatsink.
Purchasing checklist
Record the part number and suffix, phase count, repetitive reverse voltage, output-current conditions, surge-current requirement, footprint and terminal style, heat removal, ambient temperature, quantity and documentation source. For replacement assemblies, add the equipment model and original part reference. Application examples, origin labels and “original” or certification claims in supplier text are not substitutes for traceable component documentation.
Frequently asked questions
Is a bridge rectifier the same as a single diode?
No. A single-phase full-wave bridge has four diode paths and separate AC and DC terminals; a loose two-terminal diode cannot directly replace it. A three-phase bridge uses a different arrangement and terminal set.
Does a 50 A KBPC bridge deliver 50 A without a heatsink?
Do not assume so. Its usable current depends on the exact model, waveform, case temperature and cooling specified by its datasheet.
Are all MDS modules in this collection 1600 V?
No collection-wide rating is established. Read the selected suffix and verify its documented reverse-voltage and current specifications.
Will a generator kit include the rectifier wheel and varistor?
Not necessarily. Some variants are a diode pair, diode set, plate, whole kit or varistor. Confirm the chosen option's contents and equipment fit before ordering.
