Carbon Film Resistors, Axial Values & Assortment Kits

Carbon film resistors for through-hole prototyping, repair and value stocking

This collection centers on axial, color-band carbon film resistors sold as individual resistance values, bulk packs and multi-value assortment kits. The listings span stated power classes from 1/8W through 5W, with many 5% tolerance options, plus a small number of rotary carbon potentiometers and products described with mixed carbon-film and metal-oxide terminology.

What is a carbon film resistor?

A carbon film resistor is a fixed resistor made with a carbon-based resistive film on an insulating body, normally finished with axial leads and color bands. It is commonly used for general through-hole circuits, educational builds, repair stock and prototypes. Construction, dimensions and ratings vary by product, so “carbon film” alone does not establish power, voltage, noise, temperature coefficient or pulse capability.

Products in this collection

  • Single-value axial packs: resistance selections extending from sub-ohm and 0R options into kilohm and megohm ranges, depending on the listing.
  • Power-class selections: products individually described as 1/8W, 1/4W, 1/2W, 1W, 2W, 3W or 5W.
  • Assortment kits: multi-value sets for bench stock, prototyping and repair, with different value counts and quantities per value.
  • Audio-oriented listings: selected Kiwame, AMRS and other specialty listings whose claims apply only to the named product.
  • Variable resistors: WH148 dual-gang rotary carbon potentiometers with value and pack-size options.

How to choose a carbon film resistor

  1. Choose the resistance: read notation carefully. For example, 4R7 means 4.7Ω, 2K2 means 2.2kΩ and 1M means 1MΩ.
  2. Confirm tolerance: many products state ±5%, but some kit titles state ±1% and the potentiometer listings use different tolerance claims. Use the exact product specification.
  3. Calculate dissipation: use P = I²R or P = V²/R, then select adequate margin below the product's rated power under the real ambient and enclosure conditions.
  4. Check working and overload voltage: a high resistance can reach its voltage limit before its nominal wattage limit.
  5. Check body and lead dimensions: wattage labels do not guarantee one universal body size, lead diameter or PCB spacing.
  6. For low-ohm values: include lead, contact and copper resistance in the error budget; four-wire measurement may be needed.
  7. For kits: verify the value list, quantity per value, tolerance, power class and storage format rather than relying on total piece count.

Carbon film versus metal film and metal oxide

Carbon film is a practical general-purpose technology, but it is not automatically equivalent to metal film or metal oxide. Metal-film parts are often selected where tighter tolerance, lower noise or lower temperature coefficient is required, while metal-oxide parts may be chosen for different temperature, surge or power behavior. Those are family-level tendencies, not guaranteed specifications. Several products here use overlapping “carbon film” and “metal oxide” wording; verify the exact construction and datasheet before substitution.

Power-rating boundaries

The 1/8W, 1/4W, 1/2W, 1W, 2W, 3W and 5W labels belong to specific listings and variants. They cannot be transferred to another resistor because it has a similar color-band body. Confirm ambient-temperature derating, maximum working voltage, overload or pulse data, flame behavior and physical dimensions for the selected product. Do not infer fusible, flameproof or safety-certified behavior unless it is explicitly documented.

Compatibility and application boundaries

A resistor with the same nominal resistance is not necessarily a drop-in replacement. Match resistance, tolerance, power, voltage, temperature behavior, noise, pulse requirements, body size and lead spacing. Audio-oriented wording does not by itself prove lower noise or better sound, and a 0R part is a jumper element rather than an ideal zero-resistance conductor. WH148 potentiometers are adjustable multi-terminal components and should not be treated as fixed axial resistors.

Typical applications

  • LED current limiting after calculation
  • Biasing and pull-up or pull-down networks
  • Voltage dividers with tolerance analysis
  • Signal conditioning and general analog circuits
  • Educational projects, breadboards and through-hole prototypes
  • Repair inventory and multi-value bench stock

Frequently asked questions

Are all products in this collection 5% tolerance?

No. Many axial listings state 5%, but other products and kits use different claims. Check the selected listing and variant.

Can I replace a 1/4W resistor with a physically similar part?

Not from appearance alone. Match resistance, tolerance, power, voltage, dimensions and environmental requirements.

Does a 5W label guarantee the same body size across listings?

No. Verify the dimensions and lead spacing for the exact product.

Are the metal-oxide listings carbon film resistors?

Some titles mix both terms. Treat construction as unverified until the product specification or datasheet clearly identifies it.

Is a low-ohm carbon film resistor suitable for current sensing?

Not automatically. Check tolerance, temperature coefficient, power, stability and overload data, then account for lead and PCB resistance.

Do assortment kits contain every standard value?

No. Value count, range and quantity per value differ by kit. Review the exact selection before ordering.

Are WH148 potentiometers direct substitutes for fixed resistors?

No. They are adjustable, multi-terminal rotary components with separate mechanical and electrical requirements.
