Inductor Coils, Chokes and Ferrite Cores
Inductor coils for power, filtering and audio circuits
This collection brings together wound inductor coils and related magnetic parts in several different constructions. Listings include 0608, 0810 and 0912-style through-hole I-core power inductors; toroidal energy-storage coils; axial color-ring chokes; air-core and laminated-core speaker-crossover coils; small adjustable RF coils; flat-wire and multi-winding common-mode chokes; and assorted-value kits. Flat-cable ferrite cores also appear here: an unwound ferrite core is a component for building a filter, not a finished inductor with a specified inductance.
Which coil does the circuit need?
- Through-hole and toroidal power coils: The I-shape, magnetic-rod and ring-core options span µH and mH values, physical sizes, vertical or horizontal mounting and different pack quantities. For a DC-DC converter, PFC stage or filter, match the schematic's inductance plus saturation current, heating or RMS current, DC resistance (DCR), loss at operating frequency and available clearance. A title mentioning LM2596 or an inverter is not proof of drop-in compatibility.
- Axial color-ring inductors: 0307, 0410 and 0510-style options can resemble resistors but specify inductance, often in µH or mH. The “1/4W”, “1/2W” or “1W” wording in a listing is not a substitute for a checked current, DCR, Q, self-resonant frequency and operating-temperature specification.
- Speaker-crossover coils: Air-core and iron or laminated-core audio options include mH inductance choices and different wire diameters, for example 0.6–1.6 mm options in shared listings. Check the actual crossover design, inductance tolerance, DCR, current and mechanical mounting; a larger wire gauge alone does not guarantee a better crossover, and a core change can alter saturation and distortion behavior. “HiFi”, “OFC” and source-seller brand claims do not establish measured performance or authorized brand origin.
- Adjustable RF and air coils: MD0505/MD0707 and other turn-count or tunable-coil listings serve tuning or prototyping, not as fixed-value power chokes. A marking such as 1.5T denotes turns in relevant options, not 1.5 tesla or a guaranteed µH value. Confirm the tuning range, frequency, core construction, Q and physical pinout before designing them in.
- Common-mode chokes: UU9.8/UU10.5, flat-wire SQ, toroidal and surface-mount options are coupled multi-winding filters. Values may refer to inductance per winding or impedance in Ω at a test frequency; neither is an ordinary single-coil DC resistance. Match winding count and orientation, differential and common-mode behavior, insulation requirements for the specific circuit, rated current and footprint. Do not infer mains-safety certification from a shape or headline.
- Kits and cores: Multi-value I-core or axial assortments are useful for evaluation, but verify the actual contents and quantity of the selected offer. Flat-cable Ni-Zn ferrite cores and other bare magnetic pieces have no finished-coil turns or defined standalone inductance.
Practical selection checklist
- Start with the full circuit role and reference part number, then distinguish a single-winding inductor, coupled common-mode choke, adjustable RF coil or bare core.
- Choose the exact inductance and unit: 1 mH equals 1,000 µH, while nH values are smaller still. Supplier option fields called “Resistance”, “Color” or “Volume” may actually encode inductance, package, wire diameter or quantity; read the selected variant rather than the field label.
- Compare the design-critical parameters at the actual operating frequency and temperature: Isat versus RMS or temperature-rise current, DCR, Q or self-resonance, losses and winding insulation where applicable. A printed amperage or size in a shared title cannot validate every option.
- Check body and lead spacing or SMD land pattern, wire diameter, mounting direction, board height and whether the order is a single part, a multipack or an assortment.
Frequently asked questions
Can I replace a 100 µH I-core coil with a 100 µH toroid? Only after checking current, DCR, loss, saturation, dimensions and circuit behavior. The nominal inductance alone is insufficient.
Are a 10 mH speaker coil and a 10 mH common-mode choke equivalent? No. They have different winding arrangements and intended functions.
Does a ferrite cable core have a fixed µH rating? Not by itself. Effective impedance or inductance depends on its material, geometry, frequency and the conductor turns used.
