Audio DAC ICs, Converter Equipment and ADC Chip Options
DAC chips and mixed converter options: check the function before buying
This collection contains selectable PCM5100A, PCM5101A and PCM5102A stereo audio digital-to-analog converter ICs, plus an assembled SMSL PS100 audio converter that identifies an ES9023 DAC chip. It also contains MCP3008, ADS1115 and ADS1118 analog-to-digital converter ICs. Those ADC chips are not DACs even though they appear under the inherited “dac chip” search term. Select the actual product and variant number before applying any specifications. A completed audio box, a bare surface-mount stereo DAC and a bare sensor-input ADC are different deliverables.
DAC versus ADC: the fundamental direction
A digital-to-analog converter (DAC) receives digital codes or a digital audio stream and generates an analog output. For PCM5100A/5101A/5102A-family parts, the intended application is stereo audio playback from a correctly clocked digital-audio interface into an analog line-level output stage. By contrast, an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) measures an analog input and returns digital samples to a controller. MCP3008, ADS1115 and ADS1118 are ADCs. A seller product title calling MCP3008 a “Digital to Analog Converter IC Chip” is functionally wrong; its selected device remains a ten-bit analog-input converter. Do not order an ADC expecting a stereo audio output.
“Converter chip” alone does not describe bus protocol, channel count, output stage, code resolution, conversion rate, package or power. These properties belong to the exact selected IC or finished unit. A high-resolution audio DAC part number is not an interchangeable replacement for a general-purpose sensor ADC merely because both convert signals. For an audio project, write out the intended signal chain first: host digital audio to analog amplifier input requires a DAC; sensor or analog line measurement to microcontroller requires an ADC and the appropriate analog front end.
PCM5100A, PCM5101A and PCM5102A stereo DAC ICs
Two mixed-model ten-piece listings expose distinct selectable options: PCM5100APWR, PCM5101APWR and PCM5102APWR in one, and PCM5100AQPWRQ1, PCM5101AQPWRQ1 and PCM5102AQPWRQ1 in another. Each option names one device family member; the parent title listing all three does not promise a mixed assortment. Product descriptions say “10PCS/Lot.” Check the specific selection and quantity in the order summary, and do not assume the Q1-suffixed and non-Q1-suffixed items have identical performance, qualification, paperwork or price.
These are listed as bare ICs, not prewired sound cards, Raspberry Pi pHATs, headphone amps or USB DAC dongles. Integration requires a PCB designed for the exact package and pinout, suitable supply rails and decoupling, a supported digital-audio stream and an analog-output signal path. The generic seller “SOP” label is not a substitute for checking the orderable part's precise TSSOP-style package drawing, pad geometry and thermal/mechanical dimensions. Validate the full manufacturer ordering code including any packing suffix and qualification designation before creating a PCB footprint or requesting documentation.
The PCM510x-family choice affects device-specific specifications. Do not copy a PCM5102A signal-to-noise ratio, output swing, output architecture, sample-rate limit or supply details into every PCM5100A or PCM5101A order. Confirm the selected chip's published operating modes, supported input data formats and analog load in the current device datasheet. Likewise, a digital audio word length of 24 or 32 bits does not guarantee that many bits of real-world noise-free analog precision. System performance also depends on clock integrity, supply noise, board layout, grounding and downstream gain. If compliance, automotive qualification or traceable sourcing is required, the Q1-marked option alone is not a lot-specific certification or chain-of-custody record.
Digital audio integration is more than a chip name
To build a usable stereo DAC, establish the source's bit clock, left/right word clock and serial audio data timing, framing, data alignment and operating voltage. Confirm whether the exact selected IC's intended implementation requires, accepts or derives a master clock in the chosen operating mode; never assume two differently named DACs share an identical MCLK arrangement. Configure host firmware and format straps from the chosen chip's documentation. Incorrect timing can create silence, swapped channels, distorted data or clicks rather than an automatically repaired signal.
Determine the actual analog output topology before attaching headphones or speakers. A bare audio DAC is not a power amplifier, and its output specifications must be matched to a suitable load or buffer. Headphone-driver and speaker-amplifier requirements are separate. For quiet playback, budget supply filtering, local decoupling, ground-return paths, reference behavior where applicable, mute behavior and analog/digital trace coupling. A claim of “high fidelity” is not a measured result for a PCB that has not yet been designed or tested.
SMSL PS100: a finished device, not a bare ES9023
The SMSL PS100 listing is a multifunctional assembled audio converter described with an ESS ES9023 DAC chip and RCA analog outputs. Its description references HDMI ARC and USB audio; the device's supported inputs, power connector, selectable operating modes and output behavior must be verified against the exact PS100 product documentation. Ordering the black PS100 option does not deliver a loose ES9023 chip, nor does the ES9023 name alone prove that every listed transport or Bluetooth function is present and enabled. Generic attributes in the supplier data may conflict with the detailed description, so do not infer unsupported Bluetooth, surround decoding, car integration or sample rates from a single broad metadata field.
HDMI ARC is a return-audio feature that depends on the compatible TV port and supported source format. USB may act as an audio source, a power feed or both depending on the particular product; inspect the actual port labeling and specifications. RCA output is an analog audio connection and should be matched to a suitable amplifier/receiver input. This finished converter offers a fundamentally different buying decision from a pack of solderable PCM510x ICs.
MCP3008 choices in this collection are ADCs
Three listings supply MCP3008-I/SL or MCP3008T-I/SL options in stated one-, two-, five- or twenty-piece choices, depending on the product. The MCP3008 is an eight-input, 10-bit, SPI-interface analog-to-digital converter. It samples an analog voltage and provides a digital result to a host; it does not create analog stereo output. A “Default Title” MCP3008 listing describes an individual bare SOIC-16 IC, not an assembled module. The selected 1PCS, 5PCS, 20PCS or 2PCS/5PCS option determines lot size. The T in MCP3008T-I/SL relates to the exact ordering/packing code and should be checked against the manufacturer's part-number rules and seller packaging information, not treated as a separate DAC type.
For MCP3008 designs, check host SPI logic levels, ADC supply, applied reference, input range, source impedance and sampling time. A nominal ten-bit result is not a guarantee of ten-bit absolute accuracy. The ADC's eight analog channels are multiplexed, not eight simultaneously sampling independent converters. Bare surface-mount ICs require a correct SOIC-16 footprint, decoupling and analog signal conditioning. If the sensor can go beyond the chip's allowed input or common ground conditions, design the protection and interface for the actual environment. Do not attach mains or speaker-output voltages directly to an ADC input.
ADS1115 and ADS1118 options are ADCs, too
One listing offers ADS1115IDGSR in 5- or 10-piece options; another lists ADS1115 versus ADS1118 as separate ten-piece choices; a third offers ADS1115IDGSR in 5- or 20-piece variants. These are bare small-package converter ICs, not plug-in development modules. ADS1115 is commonly used as a nominal 16-bit I²C ADC with programmable gain and muxed analog inputs. Four selectable single-ended inputs do not mean four simultaneous conversions, and the published data-rate or PGA range does not guarantee measurement accuracy or authorize an input to exceed the permitted supply-referenced pin voltage. Check the exact selected part's electrical limits, footprint, address/configuration and measurement error budget.
ADS1118 is a distinct ADC choice with a different digital host interface and device feature set. A shared “ADS1115 ADS1118” product title does not indicate both are delivered and does not make their firmware interchangeable. For the ADS1118 choice, verify its manufacturer documentation, actual communication protocol, package and temperature-measurement use where applicable rather than copying ADS1115 I²C setup guidance. Generic “SOP” or “MOP10” seller package fields may conflict with the selected orderable code; match the drawing and the delivered package. Similarly, top-mark strings such as BOGI/B0GI are not by themselves adequate proof of part identity or authorized provenance.
Resolution, performance and provenance boundaries
The PCM510x products and SMSL PS100 primarily address digital audio playback. MCP3008 targets general analog-input digitization, while ADS1115/ADS1118 are selected sensor/measurement converter families with different interfaces. Do not infer that an ADC is a suitable audio playback DAC or that a PCM5102A audio DAC measures analog sensors. Even within one direction, sample rate, input word length, conversion resolution and effective analog accuracy are separate quantities. A 16-bit nominal ADC result is not a blanket promise of 16-bit noise-free measurement, and a 24- or 32-bit audio input stream is not a claim of equal analog precision.
Seller descriptions use phrases such as “New Original,” “in stock” and “high performance”; these do not independently verify manufacturer authorization, lot traceability, calibration, certification or suitability for a safety-critical design. Exact compliance documents must be tied to the selected part and supply lot. Read the product option carefully where it is a model name with no repeated quantity: the parent listing's “10PCS/Lot” is the quantity evidence, while a generic “SOP” line does not establish the PCB package drawing. For engineering builds, compare markings, electrical limits and source documentation before assembly.
Selection checklist
- Define direction: PCM5100A/5101A/5102A and a PS100 audio converter produce analog audio from a digital source. MCP3008 and ADS1115/ADS1118 digitize analog inputs.
- Define form: Choose a PS100 assembled box only if its actual input/output ports meet the system requirement; choose a bare IC only with the ability to design and assemble its power, digital and analog support circuitry.
- Read the precise selected option: Distinguish PCM5100A versus PCM5101A versus PCM5102A, Q1-suffixed versus regular part, ADS1115 versus ADS1118, and the MCP3008 packing and count.
- Match interface: PCM510x-family digital audio framing differs from MCP3008 SPI and ADS1115 I²C. ADS1118 should be evaluated from its own interface specification, not from the neighboring ADS1115 label.
- Check electrical constraints: Verify supply rails, pin logic, analog signal range, reference or clocking needs, output load and package footprint using the exact device documentation.
- Confirm deliverable and quantity: 1-, 2-, 5-, 10- or 20-piece options in these listings are separate selections, not a mixed kit or included breakout board.
Frequently asked questions
Is MCP3008 a DAC because its title says “Digital to Analog”? No. The selected MCP3008-I/SL is an SPI analog-to-digital converter, so that phrase is a seller labeling error.
Do PCM5102APWR lots include a sound card? No. They are listed as bare stereo audio DAC ICs requiring an appropriate PCB and support circuitry.
Does the SMSL PS100 order include loose ES9023 chips? No. The listed black PS100 is a finished converter that describes an ES9023 inside; it is not a loose-chip pack.
Is ADS1118 interchangeable with ADS1115? No. Select the exact option and use its own host-interface and electrical documentation.
Does Q1 in a listing prove every delivered IC is certified? No. Validate the exact orderable code, manufacturer documentation and traceability for the specific lot and intended use.
Can a DAC chip power passive speakers directly? Do not assume so. The bare stereo DAC requires an appropriate output load or amplifier stage; a speaker power amplifier is a separate product.
This collection retains mixed search results while clearly identifying device function and selected-variant boundaries. Confirm each exact part and finished unit against its current documentation before ordering or PCB design.
