Differential Amplifiers, Op Amp Modules and Signal Interfaces
Differential signal amplification, conversion and related components
Explore differential receiver and driver modules, instrumentation-amplifier boards, fully differential audio and ADC-driver stages, loose operational-amplifier ICs, discrete op-amp replacements and associated measurement electronics. This is a mixed collection, not a promise that every listed product is a differential operational amplifier. Some items use “differential” to mean pressure difference, low-dropout voltage, a circuit-breaker protection function or a differential audio input. Begin with the job the selected product actually performs, then choose its model, package, supply, interface and quantity.
Define the electrical signal path before choosing a part
A differential receiver measures a voltage difference between two conductors and rejects voltage common to both within its specified input common-mode range. A differential output driver creates complementary signal outputs for a suitable receiver. A fully differential amplifier often controls both its differential output and output common-mode voltage. An instrumentation amplifier is optimized for measuring small differential sensor signals with appropriate gain and input characteristics. A general-purpose dual op amp instead contains two amplifier channels; it does not automatically provide a differential input/output system without an external circuit. “Dual differential” in a discrete op-amp listing can describe its internal topology, not two balanced audio outputs. Match the circuit schematic and selected variant to your source and destination rather than selecting by keyword alone.
Receivers, balanced-line drivers and fully differential stages
The DRV134 board is described as an unbalanced-to-balanced dual-channel converter with differential output and a stated DC 5–24 V working-voltage range. Confirm the actual board's power terminals, output connector polarity, signal reference, headroom, common-mode behavior and downstream balanced-input requirements. A balanced line driver cannot by itself remove noise introduced before the driver and must not be mistaken for a power amplifier. The AD8129 board is listed as a differential-to-single-ended high-frequency receiver; the 200 MHz headline is application- and test-condition-dependent. At RF or fast edges, source impedance, input termination, PCB parasitics, supply bypassing, output loading and cable geometry materially change performance.
Multi-model LMH6550/AD8130/THS4131/IVA-05208 listings select different physical modules, not interchangeable settings on one chip. Check whether the chosen device is a differential ADC driver, single-ended converter or another topology, and verify pinout, supply range, common-mode control, output swing, closed-loop gain and bandwidth against its own documentation. An OPA1632-labeled fully differential audio/ADC-driver board is distinct from a dual-channel OPA1612 audio op amp. Its performance in an ADC front end depends on the converter input structure, anti-alias filtering, output common mode, resistor matching, signal amplitude and distortion conditions. Do not infer that every board in the group has the same gain, frequency range or supply rails.
Precision sensor front ends and instrumentation amplifiers
AD620 and AD623 weak-signal boards are offered as differential millivolt/microvolt instrumentation amplifier modules. Variants labeled 0–5 V or 0–10 V output select different output configurations, not different pressure or voltage inputs; determine the required supply and output headroom before connecting to a PLC or ADC. An AD8421 instrumentation amplifier listing addresses a related measurement role, while loose INA114AP DIP-8 ICs are components requiring an external gain-setting and reference arrangement. The usable input common-mode voltage depends on supply, gain and output level. A “microvolt” headline is not a guarantee that an assembled module can resolve a microvolt in an electrically noisy installation: compare input-referred noise, offset and drift, sensor source impedance, filter bandwidth, grounding and calibration.
AD8129 loose IC packs appear in 1, 10 or 30 pieces. The selected pack quantity and SOP-8 footprint are not a populated module. A single-ended sensor, bridge, floating differential source and balanced line have different reference requirements. Avoid connecting a source whose common-mode voltage exceeds the input range even when its differential signal itself is small.
Audio headphone and speaker amplifiers
TPA6132 listings describe low-voltage headphone amplifier boards, including differential-to-single-ended input arrangements. Confirm whether the particular board accepts a differential input or offers differential output, its DC 2.3–5.5 V supply, connector mapping, allowable headphone load and gain setting. The MAX97220-labeled board similarly needs its own input/output topology verified; “balanced” in a title does not establish a balanced headphone output or an interchangeable connector. HT8696/HT8697/NS4110B variants labeled 18 W, 2 × 10 W and 2 × 18 W select different speaker-amplifier arrangements and chips. Speaker power depends on supply, load impedance, heat removal and distortion limit; a differential speaker output must not be assumed ground-referenced or wired like a line-level input. These boards are not substitutes for a precision instrumentation amplifier.
Loose op-amp ICs versus discrete replacement modules
Listings include single-channel OPA827, OPA828, LF351, LME49710, AD797 and NE5534; dual-channel AD8620, OPA1612, OPA1656, OPA1622, LM833, NJM2904, MUSES-series and related models; and quad-channel OPA4277/NJM2060 options. Count amplifier channels from the actual selected part number and datasheet, not from a broad multi-model title. An OPA828 single-to-dual adapter can combine two single devices on one carrier; it does not change either IC into an internally dual amplifier. Options labeled SOP-8, SOIC, DIP-8 and “convert DIP” may be a bare surface-mount chip, a through-hole packaged chip or a populated adapter. Verify pin 1 orientation, socket height, board clearance, supply voltage, input common-mode range, output current, noise, stability and compensation before a replacement. Single and dual footprints are not automatically pin-compatible.
OPS100/OPS200, OP1100, SX52B, SA200, EQ100/EQ200, Oracle II, HDAM and other fully discrete or hybrid “op amp” modules have their own topology and dimensions. Options marked single, dual, one piece, two pieces, standard or experience are materially different configurations. A claim such as “replace OPA627/NE5532/MUSES02” is not proof of plug-in compatibility with every DAC or preamp: check single-versus-dual pinout, available rails, socket clearance, bias current, output swing, DC offset and capacitive-load stability. Audio quality, authenticity, manufacturing origin and “upgrade” language in individual listings are seller claims rather than verified collection-wide specifications.
Differential data acquisition is not an analog amplifier
ADS1256IDB ADC-module options include module-only and module-with-cable selections. ADS131M08 is listed as an eight-channel differential-input ADC module. An ADC samples and digitizes a conditioned signal; its differential pins are not a general-purpose high-voltage balanced audio receiver. Verify analog input span, reference, sampling/data interface, allowable common-mode voltage, supply, input filter and controller/software support. Nominal 24-bit resolution is a converter code width, not a guarantee of 24 noise-free bits in your assembled system. ADS1256 and ADS131M08 have distinct channel arrangements and interfaces; compare the exact device and board documentation.
Pressure-difference devices use the word differently
Air and gas differential pressure transmitters, SDP810-500PA and XGZP6899D sensors belong to pressure measurement, not electronic differential amplification as a purchasable op-amp stage. Some transmitter pages expose large combinations of ranges, output formats (4–20 mA, 0–5 V, 0–10 V, 1–5 V or RS485), supply choices, LCD/no-display construction and positive/negative or bidirectional ranges. A 0–500 Pa model cannot be treated as a 0–50 kPa model, and RS485 data cannot be directly read by a voltage-input ADC. Confirm differential port configuration, pressure units, overpressure rating, medium compatibility, required supply and calibration conditions. XGZP6899D variants carry differing ranges despite a 1 kPa headline; choose by selected option. SDP810-500PA is presented as an I2C digital sensor requiring a compatible host, not an analog voltage transmitter. Automotive exhaust differential-pressure sensors additionally require exact vehicle/part-number fitment, not just a matching pressure concept.
Other mixed-in items and safety boundaries
LM2940 and XC6206 pages describe low-dropout voltage regulators, where “low differential” means low input-to-output headroom. LM393 is a dual comparator, not an op amp intended for linear closed-loop gain. 74HC112 is a logic flip-flop despite a “differential trigger” title. The dual-DC ideal-diode/UPS switching board selects between power inputs, not between differential signal inputs. A type-A leakage circuit breaker is mains-protection equipment, not a signal amplifier; installation and ratings require qualified electrical evaluation. An ATV differential actuator is a mechanical vehicle part. The op-amp tester is a diagnostic fixture, not an amplifier IC. These items remain listed, but their functions should not be conflated with the electrical signal amplifiers above.
Selection checklist
- Decide whether the target is a differential electrical signal, pressure difference, regulated supply, audio speaker power or another function.
- For an analog stage, record signal amplitude and frequency, source/output impedance, input common-mode voltage, supply rails, target differential or single-ended output, required gain, noise and distortion budget.
- For a module, identify the exact populated chip and variant; for loose ICs, confirm package, pinout, channel count and quantity. “Blue/black” or “as shown” options do not establish electrical interchangeability.
- For a digital converter, check input range and common-mode limits along with reference, sample rate, bus protocol, firmware and included cable.
- For pressure transmitters, explicitly select the range, units, output protocol, supply and display. Do not assume every combination is available or safe for the same medium.
- Treat performance, originality, certifications and cross-brand replacement claims as requiring evidence from the exact selected product and its manufacturer documentation.
Frequently asked questions
Is a dual op amp the same as a differential amplifier? No. “Dual” means two amplifier channels in a package; a differential circuit requires the appropriate topology and component network.
Do DRV134 and AD8129 boards perform the same conversion? No. The DRV134 listing describes unbalanced-to-balanced driving, while the AD8129 listing describes differential reception to a single-ended signal. Check both board schematics.
Can a 0–10 V AD620 variant run on any 5 V supply? No. Supply and output-headroom limits of the selected board govern the achievable output; verify before purchasing.
Does a 24-bit ADC module deliver 24 accurate bits? No. Noise, reference quality, source impedance, sample rate and analog design determine effective resolution.
Is a differential pressure sensor a differential op amp? No. It measures a physical pressure difference and may communicate by analog current/voltage, I2C or RS485 depending on the selected unit.
Can a discrete “dual differential” audio module replace any DIP-8 op amp? No. Check whether it is single or dual, its physical height, supply, pinout and stability in the host circuit.
Can I ground one output of a differential speaker amplifier? Do not assume so. Consult the exact board's output topology and connector instructions; a bridge-tied output is not a ground-referenced line signal.
