Waterproof DS18B20 Temperature Probes and Sensor Options

Choose a waterproof DS18B20 probe by the complete assembly, not just its chip

This collection brings together stainless-steel DS18B20 temperature probes in selected cable lengths, threaded and lug-mount formats, sensor-and-adapter sets and related readout hardware. It also contains loose DS18B20 ICs, 1-Wire breakout boards, RS485 collectors, metal protection sleeves, Wi-Fi accessories and finished controllers. Those are not all waterproof probes. Check the selected variant for the actual sensor, cable length, connector and quantity before assuming a page's headline describes the delivered item.

What does “waterproof” cover?

A cable probe typically encloses a DS18B20-compatible digital thermometer in a metal tip joined to a polymer-insulated cable. The sensor device's commonly quoted -55 to +125°C range is not automatically the rated range of that entire assembly. The jacket, potting compound, cable-to-tip joint, terminal and adhesive may have a lower temperature limit or different chemical resistance. Some listings advertise 304 stainless and oil resistance, while others identify only a generic stainless package. Do not extrapolate a material grade, immersion depth, pressure rating, food-contact status, IP code or sterilization suitability to every product here.

For a wet installation, decide what will be immersed. A sealed metal tip may be suitable for contact with a liquid while the cable splice, open three-wire end, PH2.0 connector or adapter PCB must stay protected. Repeated bending at the metal-to-cable transition, tensile load, heat cycling and aggressive fluids can shorten a probe's life. An accessory sleeve labeled “for DS18B20” does not become a waterproof sensing assembly until a separately selected sensor and suitable mechanical seal are installed. Check the chosen item's documented sealing and materials against the actual environment, not merely the word “waterproof” in a search title.

Probe variants: length, mounting and pack size

  • Smooth stainless cable probes: several products offer one-, two-, three-, five- and ten-metre choices, sometimes written 100/200/300/500 cm. Some options combine length and count, such as “5 Meter 10pcs” versus “10 Meter 1pcs.” A product with a “Color” selector can use that selector to specify the entire delivered package. The stated cable length is not a promise of universal 1-Wire bus reliability at that distance.
  • Threaded probes: pages describing a waterproof thread temperature sensor offer different lengths and packs. Verify the actual threaded geometry, tip diameter, installation depth and mating hardware. A title using “thread” does not identify one standard thread across every listing. Check whether the selected option includes the probe alone or a terminal adapter.
  • Copper-lug probes: a lug-mount DS18B20 option lists 4, 5, 6 and 8 mm inner-hole choices with one- or two-metre shielded cable. It measures at its mounted lug rather than being a generic immersion tube. Specify the mounting-hole size and intended thermal contact; the shielded lead does not guarantee a calibrated reading without appropriate grounding and installation.
  • Small-diameter and connector-ended probes: selected pages describe a 3 mm stainless tip or PH2.0/GVS-style plug, while others use open leads or a terminal adapter. Inspect the exact connector pitch, pin order, lead count and cable construction. Identical-looking three-pin plugs may put power, ground and data in a different order.
  • Multipacks: one-, three-, five- and ten-probe options appear in addition to single probes. Do not infer a multipack from a headline if the selected variant says one probe. Conversely, a ten-piece option of bare TO-92 chips is not ten waterproof assemblies.
  • NTC alternatives: a W1209/STC-1000/W3001-related probe page offers separate “DS18B20 1m/2m/2.5m/3m” and “10K 0.5m/1m/2m/3m” choices. The 10K B3950 NTC versions are analog-resistance thermistors, not 1-Wire DS18B20 probes. Match the controller's expected sensor interface before selecting a mechanically similar probe.

Bare sensors and small boards. Through-hole TO-92 DS18B20 chips, surface-mount DS18B20Z SOP-8 and DS18B20U MSOP-8 versions, KY-001 and 18B20 breakouts appear in selectable quantities. These are electronics to integrate into a design; the loose chips and exposed PCBs are not waterproof. A DS18S20/DS1820 option is another digital thermometer variant with distinct resolution/temperature-format considerations, not just a different package of DS18B20. Check device identification and host software when substituting it.

Sensor plus adapter. Several 100 cm probe pages mention a terminal adapter or PH2.0/XH2.54-style board. Other variants supply only a probe or only a small board. Determine whether the adapter has an installed pull-up resistor and whether its data rail is pulled to a safe voltage for your controller. The board itself should not be immersed unless its own construction explicitly permits it.

RS485 Modbus collectors. One-, two- and eight-input acquisition units allow a suitable host or PLC to read compatible sensor channels over RS485 rather than exposing a raw 1-Wire bus at the host. In one eight-channel listing, “4PCS DS18B20 Sensor” is a pack of sensors, whereas “1PCS 8CH Collector” is the converter board. Other pages offer the collector with terminals, without terminals, with pins or the DS18B20 sensor alone. Match the selected supply voltage, channel count, communications format and register map to the receiving system. “No display” and display-equipped RS20D-C model choices are not the same assembly.

Wi-Fi and finished electronics. ESP8266 D1 mini/ESP-01S variant menus include “D1 DS18B20,” relay, OLED, DHT11/DHT22, RGB, battery and development-board choices. A bare Wi-Fi board is not a waterproof probe; a relay-only option is not a sensor. A 4G gateway, handheld oscilloscope/tester, 220V thermostat socket, small LED thermometer or pH/TDS kit can mention a DS18B20 input or offer a separate probe variant, but a headline does not establish a bundled sensor. Check the packing list and electrical ratings for the selected finished item.

Protective tubes. Stainless blind sleeves listed for PT100/DS18B20 in 6 × 30, 6 × 50 and longer sizes provide a mechanical tube only. They do not contain a thermometer chip or cable and may change thermal response when fitted around a probe. Verify bore, tip size, material and the sealing method for the assembled installation.

The electrical interface behind the metal tip

DS18B20 is a digital 1-Wire thermometer: a compatible host sends commands and reads conversion results over a data line. Each device can be addressed by its ROM identity on a properly designed shared bus. A 10K NTC, LM35 analog-voltage sensor, PT100 RTD and AHT20 device use different measurement interfaces; they cannot replace a DS18B20 solely because all can sense temperature. The chip's configurable 9–12-bit conversion resolution affects conversion time and displayed step size, not a guarantee of system accuracy. Confirm the actual part and host firmware before ordering a connector or conversion board.

Typical three-conductor probes need correct supply, ground and 1-Wire data assignment, with a pull-up appropriate to the host and bus. Some designs use parasite power with different current and timing requirements. Do not assume a probe advertised “for Arduino” can safely connect to a 3.3 V ESP8266, ESP32 or Raspberry Pi through a breakout that pulls DATA to 5 V. The lead colors and plug orientation must be verified from the selected product and its documentation, not a universal color convention.

A ten-metre cable option is a physical cable choice, not an electrical guarantee for a ten-metre multidrop network. Cable capacitance, pull-up strength, branch stubs, device count and nearby switching equipment influence rise times and communication margin. Keep 1-Wire wiring topology controlled, test at the intended resolution and temperature extremes, and use an appropriate interface module when the installation calls for industrial host connectivity. RS485 may carry the collector's Modbus communication over longer links, but it does not change the sensor's environmental rating or automatically isolate every collector variant.

Measurement quality and environmental fit

Check the assembly's documented operating temperature independently of the DS18B20 silicon range; probe jackets and potting can set the practical limit. Allow for thermal lag through the stainless tip, encapsulant, sleeve and mounting wall. When monitoring liquid in a pipe or tank, where the metal tip sits and how completely it contacts the medium affect the reading. Do not equate an indicated 0.1°C increment with 0.1°C calibrated accuracy. If accuracy matters, compare the assembled probe and host against a suitable reference at relevant points.

For oil, disinfectants, salt water, food processes, high pressure or prolonged immersion, require explicit compatibility for the selected probe, including the exposed tip, seam and cable. Where failure would create a hazard, provide independently specified over-temperature or process protection rather than relying on a hobby probe and firmware alone. A Tuya or other mains-connected controller appearing alongside these probes has its own installation requirements and cannot be treated as a low-voltage sensor accessory.

Pre-order checklist

  1. Select the delivered object: sealed cable probe, bare sensor IC, mounted breakout, adapter, empty protective tube, RS485 collector or finished controller.
  2. Choose exact length and count: read the selected model/color option for metres and pieces rather than using a generic multi-length headline.
  3. Confirm fit: stainless tip diameter, thread or lug-hole dimensions, lead termination and connector pin order must match the installation.
  4. Validate the medium: check complete assembly temperature rating, water exposure and cable/encapsulant compatibility; a chip-only temperature range is insufficient.
  5. Check host interface: raw 1-Wire DS18B20, 10K NTC or RS485 Modbus need different inputs and software. Verify pull-up voltage and supply for 3.3 V hosts.
  6. Inspect inclusion: a “sensor” option on a collector page might not contain the collector; a “with terminal” option might not include probes; a metal sleeve is not a thermometer.

Use the selected variant's exact photographs, component identification and documented packing list for the final decision. This collection centers waterproof DS18B20 probes without portraying every related search result as a sealed, interchangeable temperature sensor.
