Electrolytic Capacitors: Radial, SMD & Axial
Electrolytic capacitors for power, filtering and repair
Electrolytic capacitors store charge using an electrolyte-based construction and are commonly selected where relatively high capacitance is needed in a compact package. This collection includes radial and axial through-hole aluminum electrolytics, surface-mount cans, some solid or polymer-labelled options, non-polarized audio options and mixed-value assortments. Several shared listings also include ceramic capacitors, film crossover capacitors, resistors, starter kits or complete DC-DC modules; check the selected product and variant rather than assuming every item is an electrolytic capacitor.
Choose by electrical role, not appearance
- Capacitance and voltage: Match the selected variant's µF value and DC working-voltage rating to the actual circuit, with suitable design margin. 6.3 V, 10 V, 16 V, 25 V, 50 V, 63 V and higher-voltage choices appear in different listings; a pack-size selector sometimes appears under a misleading “Rated Voltage” option label, so read the full variant text.
- Polarity and chemistry: Standard aluminum electrolytics are polarized; observe the circuit and body markings. Non-polarized or bipolar audio types, solid/polymer types and ordinary liquid aluminum electrolytics are not automatically interchangeable. Match permitted reverse voltage, leakage, ESR, ripple current and lifetime for the exact part.
- Mounting and fit: Confirm radial versus axial leads, SMD footprint, body diameter and height, lead spacing, terminal style and board clearance. Large screw-terminal or snap-in-style power supply cans require their own mounting and connection checks; size alone does not identify the terminal system.
- Operating conditions: Review temperature and lifetime ratings, operating frequency, ripple current and ESR at the relevant conditions. Power supply input filtering, DC-DC output filtering and audio signal paths impose different requirements; “audio”, “low ESR” or “high frequency” in a title is not a measured specification.
Applications and replacement checks
For a power-supply replacement, record the original capacitance, voltage, polarity, ripple and ESR requirements, dimensions, lead spacing and temperature/lifetime specification. For a non-polarized coupling or crossover position, verify the original dielectric, polarity and intended signal duty instead of substituting a polarized can. A 400 V or 450 V DC electrolytic is not an X/Y mains safety capacitor. Brand names and “original” wording in marketplace listings do not establish manufacturer provenance; request traceable part information when authenticity matters.
Buying checklist
Specify exact selected variant, capacitance, voltage, electrolyte or polymer construction, polarized/non-polarized type, ESR and ripple rating where required, temperature and lifetime, mounting and dimensions, pack count and any needed datasheet or traceability. For assortments, verify the included values and quantities against the listing rather than treating every component in a kit as one type.
Frequently asked questions
Does the same µF and voltage mean a drop-in replacement? No. Polarity, ESR, ripple, lifetime, terminal style and physical fit can differ.
Can a solid or polymer capacitor replace an aluminum electrolytic? Only after checking the exact circuit's stability and surge requirements as well as the selected parts' electrical and mechanical specifications.
Are the audio and DC-DC products all loose electrolytic capacitors? No. Some are other capacitor dielectrics or assembled modules. Choose by the individual product and selected option.
