Fan Capacitors: CBB61 for Ceiling and AC Fans

Fan capacitors for single-phase AC fan motors

Fan capacitors in this collection are predominantly CBB61-style film components listed for ceiling fans, exhaust fans, range hoods and air-conditioner fan motors. A motor run capacitor is intended to remain in the motor circuit during its specified duty; seller use of “start” or “starting” in a CBB61 title does not establish that a selected part is an intermittent-duty start capacitor. Match the original fan's electrical and mechanical requirements, not the application keyword alone.

What the options actually cover

  • Single-section CBB61: Rectangular fan-capacitor listings offer multiple selected capacitances, commonly in microfarads (µF), with lead-wire, plug-in or terminal styles. A listed 450 V or 500 V number must be checked against the actual component marking for AC versus DC rating and continuous-duty suitability; do not transfer a headline rating to every option.
  • Multi-section fan packs: Listings include a three-wire 1.5+2.5 µF part and five-wire combinations such as 5+5+5 µF or 4+4+2.5 µF. Each section and its common/individual leads must be identified from the selected device's diagram. Adding the values together does not describe a single interchangeable capacitor.
  • Pack sizes and other formats: Several listings sell 1, 2, 5, 10 or 20 pieces. Some mislabel quantity as “Rated Voltage”; a pack count is not a voltage specification. One MK155J40RL-labelled fan-capacitor listing is not a generic CBB61 substitute, and “original” in a listing does not establish authorized provenance.

How to select a replacement

  1. Read the old part and fan service documentation: record each capacitance in µF, tolerance, specified AC voltage, frequency, duty, operating temperature and any required safety or motor-capacitor approvals for that exact part.
  2. Compare the selected variant, not a mixed-value product title. Check whether a 630 V or other ambiguous rating is AC or DC; a title mixing mF and µF is not a reliable conversion, because 1 mF equals 1,000 µF.
  3. Match the number of electrical sections, actual wiring diagram, lead or tab configuration, case size, fixing and clearance. A three- or five-wire speed-control part cannot be replaced solely by choosing the same total capacitance.
  4. Verify equipment fit and installation requirements with the fan manufacturer or qualified service professional. Do not use a generic mains wiring diagram for a different motor.

Purchase checklist and FAQ

Bring the fan model, original capacitor marking or service part number, section-by-section µF values, tolerance, AC rating, duty, wire/terminal diagram, case dimensions and required quantity.

Are CBB61 “starting” and run capacitors identical? No. The sales word “starting” does not specify how long the capacitor may stay energized; confirm the selected part's duty and the motor circuit.

Can a higher-voltage CBB61 replace any ceiling-fan capacitor? No. Capacitance, AC duty, section arrangement, connections and physical fit must also match.

Can a five-wire unit replace a two-wire one? Not by the headline µF value; it may contain multiple separately connected sections and needs the equipment-specific diagram.
