FPGA Development Boards, SoMs & Learning Kits

FPGA development boards: pick the exact device, board and bundle

This collection focuses on populated FPGA learning boards, system-on-modules (SoMs), carrier/development platforms and selected expansion boards. The range spans Gowin Tang boards, AMD/Xilinx Artix-7 and Zynq, Intel SoC/Agilex boards and Lattice ECP5, with a few unrelated electronics mixed into the same series. A board name may describe a family while its selector chooses a different fitted FPGA, a carrier, a downloader, a display, a camera or a bare accessory. Buy by selected variant and board revision, not the family names stacked in a headline. A SoM needs its own power and carrier integration; a carrier does not automatically include the SoM; an expansion module is not itself an FPGA board.

Gowin and Sipeed Tang platforms

Tang Nano 9K listings describe a GW1NR-9 board with onboard BL702 USB-JTAG/UART, HDMI/RGB/SPI display interfaces, 32-Mbit SPI flash, TF-card slot, LEDs and header pads in supplier text. That is a board-level description, not a guarantee that a USB cable, display or camera ships with every listing. Variants distinguish Tang nano 9k board-only from 1.14-, 4.3-, 5- or 7-inch LCD bundles. Check whether the display is included, its cable and interface, the exact FPGA marking and the logic-bank voltage in the board schematic. “RISC-V” on a 9K headline often refers to an optional PicoRV or similar soft-core bitstream, not a permanently fitted RISC-V CPU or ready-to-use Linux computer.

Tang Nano 20K “Retro Game Card Kits,” “Retro Game Kits” and “Retro Game Full Kits” represent different package selections; do not treat a card-only choice as a complete console. Tang Primer 20K distinguishes 20K Core Board, 20K Dock Board and 20K Dock Kits. A core board is not a dock; check the mating connector and whether the selected kit contains both. Tang Primer 25K appears with Core Board Package, Basic Package, PMOD Basic/Camera/Joystick/LED Matrix kits and an SDRAMV1.3 option; some other listings use opaque numbered bundles. A camera or SDRAM option might be an accessory rather than a board-and-accessory package, so obtain its explicit item list. Tang Mega 60K/138K listings distinguish 60K SoM, 138K SoM, basic packages, LCD kits and separate GC4653/OV5640 sensor options. A sensor-only variant cannot be assumed to include a 138K dock, and a SoM is not an assembled dock system. Confirm the exact Gowin device, memory, I/O route, supported IDE version and project examples for the selected hardware.

Artix-7, Spartan and higher-end programmable-logic boards

MicroPhase A7-Lite alternatives name 35T, 100T or 200T; XME0712 SoM and PE300 listings add 75T and may pair a module with a PCIe carrier. Check whether the selected product is a standalone SoM, a board fitted with that SoM or an accessory. The complete XC7A device suffix, fabric capacity, package, speed grade, available DDR, oscillators and board constraints affect implementation. A headline containing “AC7A200T” instead of XC7A200T is not a substitute for checking the fitted chip. Basys 3 XC7A35T listings distinguish board-only versus board-with-shell; Arty A7 and Nexys A7 are separate board families, with different connectors, memory and reference designs. A RISC-V label on an Artix board can describe an implementable soft core, not a hard processor or included operating system.

ALINX AXKU062 Kintex UltraScale, AXVU13G Virtex UltraScale+ and AXRF49 RFSoC boards target very different high-speed and RF workloads from a small learning board. HDMI, FMC, PCIe, SFP, QSFP and DDR labels in board titles must be checked against the exact variant's schematic, clock topology, transceiver allocation and fitted connectors; an FMC interface is not a free daughterboard. The AX7050/Spartan-7 listing mixes Video Package, Luxury Package and AN9238/AN9767/AN108/AN706 choices in one selector: those are not all AX7050 boards. Do not convert a package name into a guaranteed device or tutorial license without the chosen variant's contents.

Zynq SoC boards and modules

Z7-Lite 7010/7020, Z7-Nano 7010C/7020C, Mizar Z7010/Z7020, Zybo Z7-10/Z7-20, XME0715/PE100, XME0724/XME0726, PUZHI 7015, 7035/7045/7100 and ZU2CG/ZU3EG/ZU9EG/ZU15EG options cover distinct Arm-processing-plus-programmable-logic systems. XC7Z010, XC7Z020, XC7Z035 and XC7Z100 do not become interchangeable because they share the Zynq-7000 family name; UltraScale+ MPSoCs differ further in processing and transceiver architecture. PUZHI SoM listings include options marked “Loader Conn,” “Connectors,” “Downloader,” “Heatsink” and “SOM”; confirm whether these mean a module, a heat sink, a loader/carrier or an accessory-only unit before ordering. XME0803 3EG versus 4EV selectors likewise identify different SoC targets, not one combined kit. Check the processor subsystem, PL part, boot storage, DDR population, carrier pin map, I/O-bank voltage, MIO allocation, clocks, power sequencing and board-specific Linux/PYNQ image. “PYNQ-compatible” or “AI/Python” in a title does not establish that an image or every peripheral driver is included.

Terasic DE10-Nano (Cyclone V SoC), DE25-Nano (Agilex 5 SoC) and DE23-Lite (Agilex 3 FPGA) are different Intel platforms. Their processing architecture, memory, package, video interfaces and Quartus/tool-license needs must be validated for each exact board. A MiSTer-themed Cyclone V game-console listing is a finished or configured board package with black/white case options, not a universal substitute for a bare DE10-Nano development kit.

Lattice ECP5 and support hardware

ULX3S listings offer ECP5 12F, 45F and 85F populated-board choices as well as Expansion Boards, which should not be mistaken for an FPGA board. Other ECP5 learning boards and open-hardware projects may use different memory, USB, SD, display and programming layouts. Even where example projects describe RISC-V, that is not evidence of a hard RISC-V processor on every ECP5 device. Verify oscillator, SDRAM capacity, configuration flash, PMOD voltage and USB/JTAG implementation with the exact PCB revision. A PMOD-AUDIO add-on is a sound-interface expansion board, not an ECP5 FPGA. The AN9238 high-speed ADC board is also an external conversion module: sampling rate, analog input and digital bus must be matched to a compatible host rather than read as onboard resources of every ALINX FPGA board.

Board-selection checklist

  1. Specify the workload: LUTs/logic cells, DSP multipliers, block RAM, external DDR bandwidth, clock domains, high-speed transceivers, video/RF I/O and whether an integrated processor is essential. Resource counts are not always directly comparable across vendors or generations.
  2. Identify the shipped assembly: SoM only, dock/carrier only, assembled development board, sensor, PMOD, screen, cable, debugger or full kit. “Bundle,” “Color” and “Model” may encode the physical item, not cosmetic styling. A shipping-origin selector does not alter board features.
  3. Check electrical integration: input-power specification versus GPIO bank voltage, boot/configuration flash, reset, board-to-board connector, pinout, DDR and high-speed interface routing. A 5 V board supply does not imply 5 V-tolerant FPGA I/O.
  4. Confirm implementation tools: Gowin IDE, Vivado or Quartus must support the selected exact device and board. Obtain the revision-specific constraints, schematic, bitstream/download path, JTAG adapter, drivers and supported OS; do not assume a universal vendor toolchain.
  5. Check what is actually documented: board title, supplier description, photos and reseller certification claims can conflict. Confirm BOM, device marking, manufacturer design files, accessory list and errata before a production design. Supplier return or delivery promises are not a substitute for the store's policies or technical evidence.

Products with a different function in this series

An eight-channel 24 MS/s USB logic analyzer is an external digital test instrument for probing an FPGA design; it is not an FPGA development board. An OK-MX9352-C NXP i.MX93 single-board computer is a processor board and does not become an FPGA just because it is placed here. A Spanish-language RC snubber/relay contact-protection module is a switching transient accessory, not programmable logic, and its supplier's voltage/power statements should not be generalized into installation advice. A cryptically titled PGL22G “anti-smashing shoes” listing does not establish a clear FPGA board model from its name; verify the actual physical item and documentation before assuming it fits any of these design flows. All remain in the collection, but none should inherit another board's FPGA specifications.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Tang Nano 9K listing include a screen? Only a specifically selected screen bundle might; the plain board option is separate. Confirm contents for the chosen variant.

Are a Tang Primer core board and a dock board the same purchase? No. Their selectors distinguish SoM/core, dock and dock kit. Match their mating interface and package list.

Is a Zynq 7010 board directly replaceable with a 7020 or a ZU-series board? No drop-in equivalence is established. Device resources, packages, processing architecture and board-level connectors may differ.

Does the PUZHI “Downloader” or “Heatsink” choice necessarily include a SoM? The option text alone does not establish that. Confirm the selected item rather than relying on the multi-option headline.

Does an ECP5 “Expansion Boards” variant include a ULX3S? Not by its label. It may be an accessory-only selection; check the itemized contents.

Can a logic analyzer program an FPGA? No. It captures external digital signals. Programming requires the board's supported download method or a compatible JTAG/configuration cable.

Is “RISC-V” always a hard processor on these boards? No. Many FPGA projects implement optional soft cores; distinguish these from an SoC's built-in processor subsystem.

This guide describes the current mixed catalog without modifying collection membership. The selected variant, exact FPGA marking, PCB revision, documentation and supplied accessories determine the engineering fit; collection placement alone is not a compatibility or authenticity guarantee.
