LM358 Dual Op Amp ICs, Modules and Analog Kits

LM358 dual operational amplifiers and LM358-based circuits

Find LM358-family dual op-amp ICs in through-hole and surface-mount packages, adjustable low-level signal modules, battery-warning and VU-meter boards, LED breathing-light kits, and mixed analog-IC assortments. The actual product depends on the selected variant: a listing that names LM358 alongside LM393, NE555 or LM324 does not necessarily ship an LM358. This collection is intended for engineering selection, prototyping and repair, not as a promise that every listed IC or board performs the same function.

Identify what the listing actually supplies

A loose LM358P/LM358N DIP-8, LM358D/LM358DR/LM358DT SOP-8 or LM358PWR TSSOP-8 is a component for a correctly designed circuit. A populated LM358 weak-signal board is a complete small amplifier stage with board-specific feedback, connections and supply requirements; it is not just a chip in a different package. Other products are DIY LED breathing-light kits, alarm boards for particular battery systems, dual-channel VU meter drivers using LMC660 plus LM358, or SG3525-based PWM/inverter driver boards that happen to incorporate an LM358. A standalone square-wave generator advertised as a replacement for NE555/LM358/CD4017 can be a different architecture and should not be assumed to contain an LM358. An inverter-driver PCB is neither a finished inverter nor proof that it can safely deliver the watts quoted in a sales title.

Choosing a bare LM358-family IC

LM358 is generally described as a dual general-purpose operational amplifier suitable for many single-supply analog stages. Its eight pins include two separate amplifier channels plus supply connections; having two channels does not mean the two are automatically interconnected or that a listed pack of 10 contains 20 separate ICs. Select the exact manufacturer orderable number and obtain its corresponding datasheet. LM258 and LM2904 can be related dual-amplifier families, but suffix, electrical limits, qualification, operating temperature and manufacturer revision matter. LM358A, LMV358 and LM358 are not interchangeable simply because their names are similar: low-voltage variants can have substantially different supply limits and operating behavior. UTC358 listings claim an equivalence; check its own specification and the host circuit before replacement. Never apply a generic collection-wide supply-voltage or temperature claim to every option.

Before replacing an IC, verify supply rail and absolute-maximum limits; input common-mode range at the intended operating point; input offset voltage and drift; bias current with the sensor's source resistance; output swing and load; short-circuit and thermal constraints; bandwidth, slew rate and noise; feedback configuration and stability; package footprint, pin numbering and grade. In particular, “single-supply” does not by itself mean rail-to-rail input or output, nor does it mean an LM358 behaves identically to modern CMOS alternatives. If the source is high impedance or the signal must approach a rail precisely, quantify errors against a datasheet and test the complete circuit. Compare data at the actual gain, voltage, temperature and load rather than relying on a headline specification.

DIP, SOP/SOIC and TSSOP selection

DIP-8 parts fit a suitable through-hole footprint; SOP-8 or SOIC-8 surface-mount parts require their own land pattern or a separately sourced adapter. TSSOP-8 is smaller and not a direct drop-in for either. An LM324 or LM2902 quad amplifier may be offered in SOP-14, DIP-14 or TSSOP-14, not an eight-pin LM358 footprint. Variant labels in these listings often encode both device and package: “LM358 SOP-8,” “LM358P DIP8,” “LM324PWP TSSOP14” and “LM2904DR” describe distinct selections. Inspect pin 1, physical dimensions, pitch, lead finish and marking for repair or automated assembly. A product title listing many part numbers is not evidence that the box contains them all.

Mixed selections: amplifier versus comparator versus timer

Many product pages group LM358 with LM393/LM293/LM2903 dual comparators, LM339/LM2901 quad comparators, LM311 comparators, NE555 timers, LM386 low-voltage audio power amplifiers, LM324/LM2902 quad op amps and UA741/OP07/NE5532/JRC4558 devices. A comparator is intended to make switching decisions; its output stage and operating behavior are not those of a linear feedback amplifier. A timer, regulator controller, optocoupler or driver array has a different role again. MC34063 and UC3842-family selections are power-control ICs; TL431 is a shunt reference, PC817 is an optocoupler, ULN2003/ULN2803 are driver arrays, and CD/74HC logic or L293D motor drivers are not op amps. In a multi-model listing, choosing “LM393” or “NE555” does not add a free LM358. Match the exact selected variant to the schematic and bill of materials.

Assortment boxes, pack sizes and reel claims

Options such as 10 PCS, 20 PCS, 50 PCS, 85 PCS, 90 PCS, 100 PCS or 150 PCS can refer to a quantity of one selected model or to the total count across a mixed kit. Check whether “10 values × 10 pcs” means ten types with ten of each, and read the actual contents list before planning a build. Some 75-piece, 85-piece and 150-piece kits mix LM358 with amplifiers, comparators, timers, PWM controllers, drivers, sockets and optocouplers; package and model distribution can vary by listing. Likewise a title saying “2500PCS/REEL” does not establish that every selectable quantity is a full reel. Verify the variant, packaging format, piece count per value, and whether the supplied parts are loose, boxed, taped or reeled. Generic “new original” or origin claims are not independent authenticity evidence; production buyers should request traceability and inspect the received lot.

LM358 signal-gain and detector modules

Several adjustable weak-signal boards describe 100× gain, 5–12 V supply, 3–30 V supply or pin-header versus screw-terminal interfaces. Those are claims about particular boards, not universal LM358 IC ratings. A nominal gain may be measured only under a specified feedback setting, signal amplitude, frequency and load. High gain magnifies input offset and noise and may saturate the output well before the nominal supply rail. Check whether adjustment sets gain, threshold or offset, whether the board expects a unipolar signal, the common ground/reference, and its output impedance. “Terminal interface” and “Pin interface” are physical board choices; “1PCS/5PCS/10PCS” are quantities. Never substitute a weak-signal module for a safety-rated measurement interface without appropriate isolation, calibration and protection design.

Battery alarms, PWM drivers and DIY boards

Battery-alarm boards in this collection claim an audible/visual low-voltage warning for a particular nominal battery voltage and threshold. One description explicitly says without overvoltage protection; an alarm indication does not make the board a battery-management system, cell balancer, charger, disconnect or guaranteed over-discharge protector. Options such as “no weld” and “LM358 WELD” appear to distinguish unassembled versus fitted/soldered versions; verify component population and the supported battery chemistry before choosing. SG3525 plus LM358 inverter driver boards are pre-driver/control assemblies, not complete high-power AC inverters. Ratings such as “5000W,” frequency ranges and protective behavior should be validated against the actual external power stage, thermal design, sensing and test conditions by a qualified designer. Do not infer safe mains wiring or a universal hookup from a product title. DIY LED-breathing-light options specify LED color and LED count, and may require soldering or a separate power source. VU-meter listings distinguish DIY kit versus finished board and may require compatible meter heads or a separate supply. Review the specific product's included parts before checkout.

Engineering purchase checklist

  1. Decide whether the job requires a bare dual op amp, a populated gain module, a mixed IC assortment, an alarm/driver assembly or a DIY kit.
  2. Select the exact variant model first: LM358, LM258, LM2904, LMV358, LM358A and non-op-amp alternatives must not be silently substituted.
  3. Confirm DIP-8, SOP/SOIC-8 or TSSOP-8 footprint, physical marking, orderable suffix and lot documentation where traceability matters.
  4. For ICs, calculate operating-point errors and headroom using the selected datasheet and actual load, rail, sensor impedance and bandwidth.
  5. For boards, check fitted components, power-source expectations, terminals or headers, calibration, operating threshold, kit/finished-board status and power-stage dependencies.
  6. Check quantity per selected variant separately from channel count and from the sum printed on an assortment-box title.

Frequently asked questions

Are LM358 and LM393 the same part? No. LM358 is a dual operational amplifier; LM393 is a comparator. Their circuits and outputs are not automatically interchangeable.

Can I replace LM358 with LMV358 or LM2904? Not on name similarity alone. Check the selected supplier's datasheets and the design's rail, input, output, package and temperature requirements.

Does a 10-piece multi-model listing include ten of every chip in its title? Often the variant chooses one model. Verify the selected model and the number of pieces before ordering.

Can an LM358 module amplify any millivolt sensor to a usable output? No. Input common-mode limits, offset, noise, source impedance, gain, bandwidth and available output swing set the practical range.

Is the low-voltage buzzer board a complete battery protector? No. An audible alarm is not a verified disconnect, charger or BMS, and one listing expressly excludes overvoltage protection.

Is the SG3525/LM358 driver board a 5000 W inverter? No. It is a control/driver board; power capacity and safety depend on an independently designed and verified complete system.

Does “new original” certify authenticity? No. Request supply-chain evidence and lot-level checks for critical applications.
