MAX98357A I2S Amplifier ICs, Breakouts and Speaker Modules

MAX98357A digital-audio amplifier ICs and I2S speaker breakouts

This collection includes loose MAX98357A ICs, compact MAX98357A/MAX98357 amplifier breakout boards, small speaker assemblies, and complete ESP32-based systems that mention an onboard audio amplifier. It also contains mixed-model IC pages and a few unrelated modules. Select the exact variant and delivery format. A bare QFN or wafer-level chip does not include a PCB or speaker; a breakout does not include a programmable host; and a development board, smartwatch or camera kit is not a bag of loose MAX98357A parts.

What this amplifier is for

MAX98357A is described in these listings as a digital-audio-input, Class-D mono speaker amplifier. A host provides a compatible I2S/PCM audio stream, and the device converts and amplifies it for a small speaker. It is commonly used with ESP32 or Raspberry Pi audio projects, but the presence of those names in a title does not guarantee ready-to-run software, a microphone, a speaker or universal pin compatibility. Digital I2S audio is not I2C control. A DAC/amplifier breakout is also not a standalone Bluetooth receiver: Bluetooth audio requires an appropriate source/host elsewhere in the system.

Several module descriptions quote a 2.5–5.5 V supply, 8–96 kHz sample-rate range and approximately 3.2 W into a 4 Ω load at 5 V under a stated 10% distortion condition; others say “3 W” or conflict about speaker impedance. These are particular operating-condition or seller claims, not a continuous, low-distortion output guarantee for every board or speaker. Power output varies with supply voltage, load impedance, thermal design, gain and distortion criterion. A seller headline referring to stereo PCM input or eight-channel TDM describes possible digital input handling; it does not mean a single mono breakout powers eight separate speakers or delivers stereo output on two channels.

Choose the right item

  • Loose MAX98357AETE+T: QFN/TQFN-16 IC listings include 1-, 2-, 5-, 10- and sometimes 20-piece options. These require a properly designed PCB, suitable reflow assembly, thermal design and digital-audio interface. A marking such as AKK in a seller title is not a substitute for confirming the full orderable part and footprint.
  • Loose MAX98357AEWL+T: wafer-level/BGA-9 options appear as separate chip variants and lots, including 10- and 20-piece listings. BGA-9 and QFN-16 are mechanically different. Check the selected package, ball/pad drawing and handling capability before purchasing for board production.
  • MAX98357B alternative: some loose-chip listings offer MAX98357BEWL instead of MAX98357AEWL. The selected A or B option determines the actual chip. Do not assume the A and B suffixes are identical in digital interface configuration or directly interchangeable in an existing design.
  • I2S amplifier breakout boards: many listings offer one or more assembled small PCBs, including purple boards, “3006” breakouts and A1/A2/A3/A4 or A/B/C board variants. Board layouts, connection labeling, gain selection, speaker connectors and accessory contents vary. A filterless output architecture does not mean the breakout is a general-purpose analog line-out DAC.
  • Header assembly choices: variants labeled welding/soldered, no welding/unsoldered or no terminal distinguish assembly status. One purple-board listing says loose header accessories are included but the headers are not soldered. A “With horn” variant may include a speaker, whereas “No terminal” does not promise one. Compare option photos, contents and chosen quantity before ordering.
  • Small speaker kits: listings named I2S ESP32 Speaker Kit or I2S Speaker Module may offer colored shells or bare-module choices and sometimes mention NS4168 as an alternative amplifier. An NS4168-based selection should not be represented as a MAX98357A chip simply because the product headline contains both names.
  • Complete development systems: LILYGO/TTGO T5s e-paper ESP32 boards, T-Camera Plus S3 camera boards, T-Display-S3-Pro-LR1121 boards and T-Watch-S3 wearable devices reference MAX98357A among many integrated functions. They ship as the selected larger board, device or kit. Camera choices such as OV2640 versus OV5640, radio-frequency choices and “without E-Paper” choices are material differences; read the selected system variant rather than treating it as a standard amplifier breakout.

Digital-audio and speaker integration checklist

  1. Confirm signal format: ensure the host outputs the exact supported serial digital audio format and clocking. Some listings state no separate MCLK is needed; that does not remove the need for correctly configured bit clock, word-select and data signals. If using TDM, confirm channel mapping and board configuration against the actual chip documentation.
  2. Confirm channel selection: listings mention left, right and combined/mono input choices. One chip driving one speaker is mono even when the incoming stream contains two channels. For physical stereo speakers, design two independent amplifier channels with appropriate host routing and power capacity.
  3. Confirm supply and logic levels: distinguish VDD operating range from digital-input tolerances and from the host's GPIO voltage. Verify the exact board's voltage pins, ground, enable/shutdown and gain-select circuitry. Do not assume a 5 V speaker supply allows every digital input to be driven at 5 V.
  4. Confirm output load: match speaker impedance and power rating to the selected board and thermal constraints. The two speaker terminals of a bridged Class-D output should not be assumed to be ground-referenced; do not join one side to system ground or feed an analog line input unless the board documentation specifically provides that connection.
  5. Confirm the deliverable: chip versus assembled breakout versus complete host system; 1/2/5/10/20/50 pieces or sets; soldered versus unsoldered headers; speaker, housing and cable included or excluded. Some listings use “1 set” rather than stating every accessory, so inspect the particular package description.
  6. Confirm physical integration: QFN-16 and wafer-level packages need different PCB manufacturing approaches, while assembled boards have their own dimensions and hole spacing. Header pitch, speaker terminal style and amplifier-chip footprint are not interchangeable measurements.

Performance and engineering boundaries

Class-D output stages switch rapidly and can be efficient, but layout, supply decoupling, cable length, speaker load and EMI practices still matter. “Filterless” generally refers to the intended output-filter approach in an appropriately designed speaker application; it does not authorize arbitrary wiring, long speaker leads or connection to a line-level input. If noise, heat or radiated emissions matter, evaluate the exact assembled board under realistic supply, enclosure and cable conditions. Audio claims such as “crystal clear” and “3 W” do not establish measured THD+N or listening quality. A few source pages mix “maximum power per channel: 6 W” with a roughly 3 W output description; do not promote the higher generic category value to a verified board specification.

For a loose IC, consult the exact manufacturer's data sheet for digital timing, gain and channel-mode strapping, supported load, start-up/shutdown behavior, thermal limits and package land pattern. For an assembled board, also check how its builder wired those mode pins and whether headers or speaker connectors are fitted. Do not claim a board has a specific gain just because one source listing cites selectable gain steps. A package marking, a seller's “original” claim or a generic compatibility statement is not proof of authorized sourcing, independent testing or compliance certification.

Other products in this collection

MAX9814 and MAX4466 listings are microphone preamplifier/sound-detection modules, not MAX98357A speaker-output amplifiers. AD9833 is a waveform-generation module; MAX15026/MAX15059 options are other ICs in a mixed-model page; and one 98-series circuit-breaker listing is unrelated to digital audio. These remain listed here, but their selected variants determine what ships. A mixed title containing MAX98357A cannot turn every option into a MAX98357A amplifier.

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect an analog headphone jack directly to an I2S breakout? No. Its input is a digital serial audio stream, not an analog audio input. Its speaker power output is not automatically a headphone or line-level output.

Does “stereo PCM input” mean stereo speaker output? Not on a single mono amplifier channel. Channel selection or mixing of a stereo stream is different from driving two physically separate speakers.

Does “without filtering” mean no external components are ever needed? No. It describes one output approach and does not eliminate the need for correct supply bypassing, speaker-load matching and a suitable board-level design.

Are MAX98357AETE and MAX98357AEWL the same package? No. The selected QFN/TQFN and wafer-level/BGA variants have distinct assembly requirements and footprints.

Will the board include pin headers or a speaker? Only where the exact selected variant and product contents say so. Unsoldered headers, no-terminal versions and with-speaker options are separately described on some listings.

Choose by the selected model, package, board revision and required host interface. Model names aid identification, not a guarantee of manufacturer affiliation, authenticated provenance, universal ESP32/Raspberry Pi compatibility or uniform audio performance.
