Polypropylene Film Capacitors, MKP & CBB
Polypropylene film capacitors for circuit, audio and selected AC uses
Polypropylene film capacitors use a polypropylene dielectric; metallized polypropylene is often labeled MKP, while CBB21, CBB22, CBB81 and CBB20 refer to different listed constructions and formats. This collection includes radial and axial loose capacitors, mixed-value packs, audio crossover options, high-voltage pulse-oriented parts, X2-labeled AC suppression parts and a CBB61 motor-run listing. A matching capacitance alone does not make these applications interchangeable.
Choose by component family
- General MKP and CBB radial parts: CBB21/CBB22 and similar variants cover pF, nF and µF choices with option-specific working voltages and lead pitches, including 5, 7.5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 mm in selected listings. Check the chosen variant's actual code and dimensions.
- High-voltage CBB81: selected listings specify 1600 V, 2000 V or 3000 V DC and values such as 1 nF, 10 nF, 22 nF and 47 nF. The voltage and CBB81 name alone do not establish pulse-energy, dv/dt, ripple-current or snubber capability; check the exact datasheet and installation.
- Audio coupling and crossover: axial MKP and other audio-marketed capacitors offer different capacitances, tolerances, DC ratings and pack quantities. Design around the actual crossover schematic and driver impedance rather than subjective sound claims.
- X2-labeled AC safety products: several listings offer 275 VAC variants and differing lead pitches and capacitances. Confirm X2 class markings, approval documentation, operating temperature and applicable AC rating for the exact part before across-the-line mains use.
- Motor-run CBB61: the fan-motor listing offers selected µF and AC-voltage options. Check continuous motor-run duty, AC rating, dimensions and terminals against the motor's required specification; it is not a general-purpose DC film part.
- Assortments and exceptions: packs differ by piece count, dielectric, capacitance and voltage. A monolithic ceramic capacitor kit appears in the collection and is not a polypropylene film capacitor.
Selection workflow
- Identify circuit position first: signal coupling, crossover, DC filtering, pulse/snubber, across-line suppression or motor running.
- Match the nominal capacitance and tolerance for the selected variant; convert pF, nF and µF without treating a three-digit value code as a full part specification.
- Separate DC working voltage from AC operating voltage and safety classification. Neither a high DC number nor a 275 VAC title proves an approved X2 component.
- Check polypropylene construction, lead style, pitch, body size and allowable temperature against the PCB or enclosure.
- For pulse or AC current, check the manufacturer's specified dv/dt, peak current, dissipation, ripple and thermal conditions for the actual device.
- Confirm the exact value, voltage, pack quantity and any approvals before placing an order.
Compatibility and safety boundaries
An X2 capacitor is designed for an appropriate across-the-line position only when its class and approvals are verified; X and Y safety classifications are not substitutes for each other. A CBB81 high-voltage DC part should not be substituted for an X2 mains component based solely on voltage. Audio and motor-run units likewise need their own application-specific ratings. Seller labels such as “original,” branded audio names or “safety” do not independently verify provenance, certification or performance.
Buying checklist

- Pulse, ripple, temperature and expected duty
- Axial/radial format, lead pitch, terminals and case dimensions
- Exact model, option and pieces per pack
Frequently asked questions
Is MKP the same as any capacitor marked CBB?
No. MKP describes metallized polypropylene, while CBB family labels span distinct constructions and dimensions; verify the selected part.
Can a 2000 V CBB81 replace a 275 VAC X2 capacitor?
No. A high DC working voltage does not demonstrate X2 safety classification or approvals for mains suppression.
Will an audio crossover capacitor work as a motor-run capacitor?
Do not assume so. A motor-run circuit needs an explicitly suitable continuous AC rating, duty and terminal/mechanical fit.
Are all items here polypropylene?
No. One ceramic assortment is included. Verify the dielectric and selected option on each product listing.
