PTC Thermistors, Temperature Sensors and Heater Components

PTC (positive temperature coefficient) components increase resistance as temperature rises, but that shared behavior does not make every PTC part interchangeable. This collection brings together PTC thermistor elements, KTY-type silicon temperature sensors, resettable overcurrent protectors, compressor-start components, motor-protection parts and PTC heaters. Choose by the job the selected part performs, then verify its electrical, thermal and mechanical specifications.

What is in this collection?

  • Temperature-sensing PTC elements and KTY sensors: resistance is interpreted by a compatible measurement circuit. Compare the specified resistance at its reference temperature, resistance-versus-temperature curve, tolerance, operating range, lead format and sensing location. A KTY silicon sensor is not automatically a drop-in replacement for a ceramic PTC or an NTC probe.
  • Overcurrent and resettable protection components: select by normal operating current, trip behavior, voltage rating, ambient temperature and recovery conditions. A protective PTC is not a calibrated temperature sensor, and a resettable part does not replace a specified fuse without circuit review.
  • Compressor-start PTC chips and motor-protection assemblies: starting elements, relays and thermal protectors have different functions. Match the exact appliance service specification, motor circuit, terminals, dimensions, temperature behavior and approved replacement part; a matching appearance or appliance keyword alone is insufficient.
  • PTC heating elements and fan-assisted heaters: these are heat-producing components or assemblies, not measurement sensors. Compare the selected unit's rated supply, power or temperature behavior, dimensions, airflow or mounting needs, thermal clearance and enclosure requirements. A heater with a fan is not equivalent to a bare heating chip.
  • Thermal switches and related accessories: a switch opens or closes a circuit at a specified temperature rather than providing the same continuous resistance measurement as a thermistor. Verify switching action, temperature setting, current rating and reset behavior for the chosen part.

How to choose a PTC component

  1. Identify the circuit function: temperature measurement, overcurrent limiting, compressor starting, motor protection or heating. Do not begin selection from package shape or resistance alone.
  2. Check the exact option and documentation: compare part number, resistance and reference temperature where relevant, curve or trip behavior, allowable voltage and current, temperature limits and tolerance. Ratings stated for one listing option must not be assumed for its other variants.
  3. Match the physical installation: confirm body dimensions, leads or connectors, mounting position, thermal contact, insulation and environmental requirements. For replacement parts, cross-check the equipment manufacturer's service information.
  4. Review the complete assembly: a chip, relay, thermal switch and finished heater can appear in the same search results but include different circuitry and safeguards. Confirm whether the offer is a single component, set, module or fan-assisted assembly and check the quantity in the selected option.

Compatibility boundaries

Some listings in this collection also offer MF72 or other NTC parts, varistors, capacitors or hot-end accessories. NTC resistance falls with rising temperature; an NTC inrush limiter is selected by its cold resistance, steady-state current and surge-energy characteristics, not by PTC sensor criteria. Varistors clamp transients, capacitors store charge and thermal switches change contact state: none becomes a PTC merely by sharing a listing. PT100/PT1000 RTDs, digital probes and thermocouples likewise require their own readout circuits. Treat mixed listings as option-specific, not as evidence of interchangeability.

Before ordering

Record the equipment or circuit reference, required function, exact selected variant, resistance curve or trip/heating specification, voltage and current limits, operating temperature, dimensions, terminals and quantity. For mains-powered heaters, motor circuits and compressor repairs, use the equipment documentation and a qualified technician; this page is a selection guide, not a universal wiring or repair procedure.

Frequently asked questions

Does any PTC thermistor work as a temperature sensor?

No. A sensing PTC needs a compatible resistance-temperature curve and readout circuit. A heater or overcurrent protector is specified for a different function.

Can a PTC replace an NTC with the same nominal resistance?

No. Their temperature responses differ, and nominal resistance at a single temperature does not establish a matching curve or circuit behavior.

Is a compressor starter chip the same as a motor-protection relay?

No. Starting and protection are distinct roles. Check the specified assembly and equipment service part rather than substituting by size or keyword.

Does a self-regulating PTC heater need no thermal review?

No. The installed assembly still needs a verified supply rating, mounting, ventilation, enclosure and protection appropriate to its application.
