SMD Resistor Arrays & SIP Resistor Networks

Resistor arrays for multi-channel PCB design

A resistor array places multiple resistive elements in one package. This collection centers on 0402×4 and 0603×4 chip arrays, selected 16-terminal eight-resistor networks, and pin-style SIP resistor networks. It also includes resistor assortment kits that contain individual components rather than integrated arrays. Select by internal schematic and footprint, not the word “array” alone.

Which array formats appear here?

  • 8P4R SMD arrays: listings describe four resistor elements in an eight-terminal chip package, including 0402×4 and 0603×4 formats with numerous ohmic values. Verify each product's internal connections and body dimensions.
  • 16P8R arrays: EXB2HV and other 16-terminal listings describe eight resistor elements. EXB2HV470JV and related part-number options have product-specific resistance, tolerance and element-power claims, not universal series ratings.
  • EXB38V-style arrays: a listed 0603×4, 3.2×1.6mm overall-format option claims 10kΩ, 5% and 63mW for the specified part. Confirm the manufacturer drawing before substitution.
  • 10-pin and SIP networks: a 1206×5 listing uses mixed 10P8R terminology, while 4–10 pin through-hole networks include A05 and A-series values. Check the exact schematic: terminal count does not settle resistor count or common-pin topology.
  • Assortment kits: 0201–1206 sample books, thin-film 1206 packs and 1206 mixed-value bags are collections of discrete resistors, not automatically resistor-network packages.

Independent, bussed and commoned topology

An independent array has separate two-terminal resistor elements. A commoned or bussed network connects multiple elements to a shared terminal. These cannot be substituted by pin count and resistance alone. “Exclusion” in some marketplace titles is not a reliable circuit designation; use a pin diagram and continuity/schematic evidence. An 8P4R label normally suggests eight terminals and four resistors, but verify the actual internal circuit. The 10P8R and “1206×5” claims in one listing conflict as a general topology description, so do not treat either as a collection-wide pinout.

How to choose an SMD resistor array

  1. Draw the required circuit: isolated channels, shared bus or matched ratio network.
  2. Count resistors and terminals, then confirm the actual pin assignment and orientation.
  3. Compare the complete body size, terminal geometry, land pattern and assembly method; “0402×4,” “0603×4” and “1206” are not interchangeable footprints.
  4. Choose the selected resistance. R means ohms, K kilo-ohms and M mega-ohms; 0R is a jumper value, not an ordinary resistive channel.
  5. Verify tolerance for the exact variant: the listings include 1%, 5% and a separate 0.1% thin-film kit, not one array-wide tolerance.
  6. Check power per element and package-wide dissipation, operating temperature, TCR and any pulse or working-voltage limit.
  7. Confirm the pack quantity: options include small packs and thousands-piece production lots.

Electrical and application boundaries

Resistor arrays can simplify multi-line pull-ups, pull-downs, LED current-limiting groups and signal-conditioning layouts when the topology and ratings match the circuit. Equal-value elements in one package do not prove precision ratio accuracy or TCR tracking. A 63mW or 1/16W claim applies only to the stated part and test conditions; total package heating can require derating. Package code alone does not establish resistance, material, voltage, certification or manufacturer authenticity.

Compare an array with a resistor sample book

A chip array is one component containing multiple elements with defined internal connections. A sample book or assorted bag holds separate resistors for prototyping and replacement. Even if both have “1206” in their titles, a discrete 1206 resistor cannot replace an integrated multi-channel array without a PCB redesign.

Ordering checklist

  • Isolated or commoned internal schematic
  • Element count, pin count and pin-1 marking
  • Resistance of the selected option
  • Footprint and overall body dimensions
  • Element tolerance, TCR and ratio tracking if required
  • Power per resistor and total package derating
  • Working voltage and pulse limits
  • Manufacturer drawing and pack quantity

Frequently asked questions

Does 8P4R always mean four independent resistors?

It generally indicates eight terminals and four elements, but the internal topology must be confirmed from the exact product schematic.

Can a 0402×4 array replace a 0603×4 array?

Not without checking body dimensions, terminal layout, land pattern, pinout and ratings.

Does 0.1% in the thin-film kit apply to every array here?

No. That claim belongs to the individual 1206 resistor pack, not the other network listings.

Is “exclusion network” a precise electrical category?

No. Confirm whether the actual device is isolated or commoned from its schematic.

Are sample-book resistors integrated arrays?

No. They are separate components packaged as an assortment.
