SMD Capacitors: MLCC, Electrolytic & Polymer
Surface-mount capacitors for PCB design and repair
An SMD capacitor is a capacitor built for surface-mount assembly. This collection contains multilayer ceramic chip capacitors (MLCCs), aluminum electrolytic and polymer capacitors, selected tantalum parts, and multi-value assortment kits. These technologies serve different circuit needs and must not be substituted on package size or nominal capacitance alone.
What is in this collection?
- Ceramic MLCCs: individual chip parts and reels in 0201, 0402, 0603, 0805, 1206, 1210, 1808, 1812 and 2220 formats. Listings include C0G/NP0, X7R and X5R options with capacitance and rated voltage that vary by selected variant.
- Aluminum electrolytic and polymer SMD parts: cylindrical chip capacitors and polymer options with case diameter and height, voltage, capacitance and sometimes low-ESR claims stated by individual listing. They are generally polarized and require the correct footprint and orientation.
- Tantalum and supercapacitor listings: a few surface-mount tantalum listings and a 0.2 F capacitor appear here; 0.2 F is 200 mF, not 0.2 pF as one option label suggests. Verify the exact product specification before use.
- Sample books and kits: 0201–1206 MLCC assortments and electrolytic sets vary in included values and counts. Some shared listings instead offer resistor or ferrite-bead books; read the selected option before buying.
Choose the right dielectric and construction
C0G/NP0 ceramic capacitors are commonly selected when stable capacitance is important. X7R and X5R offer different temperature characteristics, but effective capacitance can fall under DC bias; calculate from the actual part's voltage-dependent data rather than treating the printed µF value as guaranteed in-circuit. “NPO” and “X7R” in the same title may reflect separate variants, not a single shared dielectric. Electrolytic, polymer and tantalum parts have different ESR, leakage, ripple-current, polarity and service requirements. A high-voltage option in one listing does not make all chip capacitors high-voltage rated.
PCB capacitor selection steps
- Identify the circuit function: decoupling, filtering, timing, signal coupling or bulk energy storage.
- Choose capacitance in pF, nF, µF or F, then check tolerance and the selected variant's rated voltage and appropriate voltage margin.
- Confirm dielectric or technology, including DC-bias behavior for MLCCs and ESR, leakage and ripple-current requirements for electrolytic or polymer parts.
- Match package dimensions, height and land pattern. Imperial 0603 is usually metric 1608, while imperial 0805 is metric 2012; do not confuse imperial and metric 0201/0402 labels.
- Check temperature range, mechanical stress and any high-voltage clearance requirements against the exact manufacturer's documentation.
- For polarized parts, verify the terminal marking and PCB polarity. For an assortment, confirm the included value chart, quantities and technology.
Specification boundaries
Capacitance codes such as 104 (100 nF) and 106 (10 µF) encode nominal values, not voltage, dielectric, size or actual capacitance under bias. High-voltage 1 kV–3 kV MLCC variants and 100 V–400 V aluminum electrolytic variants require part-specific confirmation; voltage ratings cannot be inferred from another option. RoHS or brand claims in seller titles are not collection-wide certifications or proof of origin. A ceramic MLCC cannot be assumed electrically equivalent to a tantalum, aluminum electrolytic or polymer capacitor.

Frequently asked questions
Are C0G and X7R interchangeable?
Not automatically. Compare capacitance stability, DC bias, temperature range and the circuit's requirements for each actual part.
Does a 1206 marking guarantee the same capacitor?
No. The package format does not determine capacitance, voltage, dielectric or performance.
Can I replace an aluminum electrolytic capacitor with an MLCC?
Only after checking effective capacitance, ESR, ripple current, leakage, voltage and circuit stability, and redesigning the footprint if required.
Does every sample-book option contain capacitors?
No. Some shared listings include resistor or ferrite-bead selections. Check the selected option and included value chart.
