SMD Chip Resistors, Reels & Assortment Kits

SMD chip resistors for PCB assembly, prototyping and repair

This collection covers fixed surface-mount resistors sold as single-value packs, mixed-value assortments and production reels. Listings span compact chip sizes such as 0201, 0402, 0603 and 0805 through larger 1206, 1210, 1812, 2010 and 2512 formats. Available options include zero-ohm jumpers, low-ohm values, common E-series values and resistance choices extending into the megohm range. Exact resistance, tolerance, rated power, package and quantity are product- and variant-specific.

What is an SMD resistor?

An SMD resistor is a surface-mount component that limits current, divides voltage, sets bias conditions, terminates signals or provides a defined resistance on a printed circuit board. Unlike axial through-hole resistors, chip resistors are soldered directly to PCB pads. Their small body size supports compact assembly, but package code alone does not define resistance, tolerance, power handling, voltage rating or construction.

Products in this collection

  • Single-value chip resistors: packs containing one selected resistance value, with options commonly expressed as R for ohms, K for kilohms and M for megohms.
  • Zero-ohm links: 0R chip jumpers used as configurable PCB links; they are not ideal conductors and still have current and resistance limits.
  • Low-ohm resistors: selected options below 1Ω for sensing, current limiting or power paths, where TCR, power dissipation and Kelvin layout may matter.
  • Assortment kits: multi-value sets covering selected resistance ranges and package sizes for prototyping, repair benches and development stock.
  • Production quantities: larger lots and full-reel listings for machine placement or repeated assembly.

Package-size guide

Imperial package codes describe nominal body dimensions, not electrical performance. Smaller parts save board area but generally have less surface area for heat dissipation and are harder to handle manually. Larger formats may support higher power in a suitable design, but the exact rating must come from the selected product data.

  • 0201 and 0402: ultra-compact parts for dense boards and controlled assembly processes.
  • 0603 and 0805: common general-purpose sizes balancing PCB area and assembly convenience.
  • 1206 and 1210: larger footprints used where board space, voltage, heat or manual handling influences selection.
  • 1812, 2010 and 2512: larger chip formats represented in selected listings, often considered for higher-dissipation or low-ohm applications after rating verification.

How to choose an SMD resistor

  1. Select the resistance: calculate the required nominal value and read notation carefully. For example, 4R7 means 4.7Ω, 2K2 means 2.2kΩ and 1M means 1MΩ.
  2. Choose tolerance: listings include options described as 0.1%, 1% or 5%. Use the exact tolerance stated for the selected variant; a collection listing does not make every value available in every tolerance.
  3. Match the package: verify imperial or metric size, land pattern, body dimensions and assembly capability.
  4. Check power dissipation: calculate P = I²R or P = V²/R, then apply appropriate thermal derating. Do not rely on package size alone.
  5. Check working voltage: the permissible applied voltage can be lower than the value implied by the power equation. Confirm working and overload limits for the exact part.
  6. Consider temperature behavior: precision, sensing and analog circuits may require a defined temperature coefficient and long-term stability.
  7. Select packaging: compare loose packs, cut tape, assortments and full reels according to prototype or production needs.

Resistance, tolerance and power are separate specifications

A 10kΩ resistor can be offered in several package sizes and tolerance grades, each with different thermal and voltage limits. A tighter tolerance improves initial resistance accuracy but does not automatically guarantee low TCR, pulse capability, low noise or high stability. Likewise, a larger package does not prove a specific wattage unless that rating is stated for the exact component and operating conditions.

Low-ohm and current-sense selection

At milliohm and sub-ohm values, PCB traces, solder joints and probe leads can become a significant part of the measured resistance. Confirm the actual resistance notation, tolerance, TCR, power rating and pulse requirements. For accurate current measurement, consider four-wire or Kelvin routing where the circuit requires it. Do not infer current-sense suitability from resistance value alone.

Assortment kits versus single-value packs

Assortment kits are useful when many values are needed in small quantities, but the listed number of values and pieces per value varies. Single-value packs simplify replenishment for a known BOM. Full reels suit automated placement only when tape width, pitch, orientation, reel quantity and component specification match the production process.

Applications

These resistors can be selected for pull-up and pull-down networks, LED current limiting, transistor biasing, feedback dividers, filtering, timing support, signal termination, zero-ohm configuration links and general PCB repair. Suitability depends on the circuit voltage, current, frequency, pulse energy, ambient temperature and required accuracy.

Specification boundaries

No collection-wide claim is made for a single resistance range, wattage, material system, voltage rating, TCR, pulse rating, automotive grade, flameproof behavior or certification. Product titles sometimes present overlapping or inconsistent wattage claims for the same package size, so buyers should apply only specifications supported by the exact selected variant and its technical documentation.

Frequently asked questions

Does 0805 define the resistor value or wattage?

No. 0805 identifies a body-size family. Resistance, tolerance, power, voltage and construction are separate specifications.

What does 4R7 mean?

It means 4.7 ohms. The letter replaces the decimal point and indicates the unit range; K and M are used similarly for kilohms and megohms.

Is a 0R resistor the same as a wire?

No. A zero-ohm jumper has small but finite resistance plus current, power and voltage limits.

Can a 1% resistor replace a 5% resistor?

Its nominal accuracy may be tighter, but replacement still requires matching resistance, package, power, voltage, temperature behavior and circuit conditions.

Can package size be used to calculate power rating?

Not reliably. Package size influences heat dissipation, but actual rated power depends on the component design, PCB, ambient temperature and derating rules.

Are all assortment kits the same?

No. Compare package sizes, value list, tolerance, pieces per value and total quantity for the exact kit.
