SN65HVD230 CAN Transceivers, Modules and Controller Boards
SN65HVD230 purchasing guide: chip, transceiver board or CAN controller assembly?
This collection includes loose SN65HVD230DR/QDR SOP-8 CAN transceiver ICs, small 3.3 V SN65HVD230/VP230 breakout modules, MCP2515-plus-transceiver CAN boards, Raspberry Pi expansion HAT choices, XIAO/QT Py-style breakouts and multi-model IC listings. Several products also offer SN65HVD231/232/other family codes, MCP2551 modules, RS-485 HAT variants or unrelated electronics. The product title alone does not establish that the chosen option contains an SN65HVD230, a CAN controller, galvanic isolation or a complete CAN interface. Check the selected model, board circuitry, supply and quantity before ordering.
Separate the CAN controller from the bus transceiver
The SN65HVD230 is a CAN physical-layer transceiver: it converts a controller-side transmit signal into differential CANH/CANL bus signaling and presents received bus data to the controller side. It does not independently frame CAN messages, set identifiers, perform arbitration, provide message buffers or create a USB or SPI port. An MCU needs a CAN controller function, either internal to that MCU or supplied by a separate controller such as an MCP2515, plus compatible software. A simple board marked SN65HVD230/VP230 may be only a transceiver breakout. By contrast, a module explicitly containing an MCP2515 and SN65HVD230 combines a CAN controller with a physical-layer device, commonly connected to a host over SPI. Verify the actual PCB, controller IC, oscillator, supply, interrupt connection and SPI pinout rather than inferring them from “for Arduino” or “for Raspberry Pi.”
Several MCP2515 listings describe classic CAN 2.0B operation with up to eight payload bytes and a stated 1 Mb/s maximum under their documented conditions. That is not the same as CAN FD. A dual-channel HAT headline that also claims CAN FD while mentioning MCP2515 and SN65HVD230 is internally inconsistent without evidence of a CAN FD-capable controller and compatible physical layer. Do not claim CAN FD support for these mixed listings on the basis of the title. Equally, a bus transceiver labeled “1Mb/s” does not ensure the host controller, software, cable and installed network can achieve that rate.
3.3 V SN65HVD230 boards and standalone ICs
Many small modules describe a 3.3 V CAN transceiver board, sometimes stating a DC 3–3.6 V supply and onboard ESD features. The supply belongs to that particular chip/board; do not connect an unverified 5 V supply to a 3.3 V-only breakout simply because other CAN products run at 5 V. Review the exact IC manufacturer's recommended VCC, TXD/RXD logic thresholds, bus common-mode range, control pin behavior, standby/slope-control configuration, power-off state and package thermal limits. CANH/CANL are bus lines, not ordinary TTL UART RX/TX pins. A transceiver module's controller-side TXD/RXD must be matched to the host CAN controller's electrical domain and protocol timing.
Loose-chip offers identify SN65HVD230DR, SN65HVD230QDR and VP230 markings in SOP-8-style packages, often offered as 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40 or 50 pieces. A bare IC requires an engineered PCB, power decoupling and network-facing protection/connector design; it is not a plug-in CAN network interface. “10 PCS” on a mixed title may mean ten units of a selected code, not ten different CAN parts. Supplier claims of “original,” “100% new,” “ESD protected,” “industrial” or “certified” do not independently verify origin, qualification grade or testing across every lot. Some source product fields call a CAN chip a “voltage regulator,” which is inconsistent with its described transceiver function and should not be treated as its actual product type.
Choose the selected family member, not the headline group
Some listings offer SN65HVD230DR versus SN65HVD231DR or SN65HVD232DR through Color choices, with others listing SN65HVD234, SN65HVD235 or SN65HVD251. These part numbers can differ in control behavior, operating supply, supported modes and electrical specifications; check each complete suffix and datasheet before substitution. One choice labeled “SN65HVD223 VP233” conflicts with the family name in the same product title, so verify the actual device marking rather than treating it as a confirmed SN65HVD233. A separate listing lets buyers select “MCP2551 Module” or “SN65HVD230 Module” and choose 1/2/5/10 pieces. MCP2551 is a different transceiver and its board may use different supply and host-side logic arrangements. “Pinout compatible” in a seller description is not an unconditional drop-in guarantee across power rails, modes, pin functions and bus constraints.
Another multi-model offering lists SN65HVD230DR next to MPF102, PIC16F688, Z0109MN5AA4, CR6853 and DAS001. The Color option identifies a specific part and piece count, for example 3, 5 or 200 pieces of the selected code; the other choices are not CAN transceivers. One mixed evaluation-board listing similarly lets Color select an SN65HVD230 CAN Board or unrelated audio, GPRS and MCU evaluation hardware. Do not interpret the headline as the contents of a single kit. Confirm chosen variant and packing details at checkout.
Controller boards and host-specific expansion products
The collection includes XIAO/QT Py-shaped CAN breakout listings described with MCP2515 and SN65HVD230, and a mixed product with “Seeed XIAO RP2040,” “CAN Breakout Board” and “XIAO Shield” as distinct Color selections. Choosing the RP2040 host board is not necessarily choosing the CAN breakout, and choosing a CAN breakout does not necessarily include the XIAO host. Verify stacking geometry, logic power, SPI assignment, interrupt and connector arrangements for the selected revision. References to development ecosystems or maker boards indicate a possible application, not universal plug-and-play support or endorsement by the named platform maker.
Raspberry Pi HAT listings offer Color variants such as “2-CH RS485 HAT,” “2-CH CAN HAT,” “RS485 CAN HAT” and “USB to RS485 Module.” RS-485 signaling is not CAN, so the selected RS-485 option must not be described as an SN65HVD230 CAN interface. A HAT with CAN and RS-485 functions needs the appropriate controllers, transceivers and host configuration for each interface. A headline saying “isolated” or “TVS protection” does not make all variants isolated: validate isolation barrier, isolated power, working voltage and protection circuitry on the selected PCB. TVS parts provide transient suppression, not galvanic isolation. Similarly, a seller sentence attributing “electrical isolation capabilities” to a stand-alone SN65HVD230 board should not be used as proof that an isolator is installed.
CAN network engineering boundaries
At the system level, confirm CANH/CANL polarity from the actual board markings, cable impedance, network topology, end-of-line termination, stub lengths, common reference and electromagnetic environment. A common CAN network places termination at the physical endpoints, not at every node; an MCP2515 module listing may claim an onboard 120-ohm resistor, which must be checked for presence and whether it can be enabled or disabled in the actual network. A high-input-impedance claim such as support for 120 nodes is not a blanket guarantee of that many reliable devices: transceiver loading, cable length, rate, common mode and power conditions must be evaluated together. An ESD or thermal-protection phrase in a source listing does not substitute for system-level surge, wiring and fault analysis.
Automotive diagnostic use requires more than a CAN physical-layer chip. Vehicle-side connectors, protocol interpretation, bus voltage/fault environment and qualified protective design must be selected independently. Do not use a generic maker module as evidence of automotive qualification. If a production system needs verified isolation, extended common-mode tolerance, functional-safety compliance or CAN FD timing, choose components with documented ratings for those requirements rather than extrapolating from this collection's keywords.
Step-by-step selection checklist
- Choose the delivered form: loose SOP-8 transceiver, populated 3.3 V breakout, MCP2515 controller-and-transceiver module, host-specific CAN HAT, RS-485 alternative or unrelated selected IC.
- Verify the exact variant: SN65HVD230, 231, 232, other family member or MCP2551; check model and piece count even when Color contains a code rather than a visible color.
- Match the host: internal CAN controller versus external MCP2515 over SPI, valid TXD/RXD logic levels, board power rails, interrupt/clock connections and software support.
- Validate network requirements: classic CAN versus CAN FD, intended bit rate, bus wiring, two endpoint terminations, stub length, node load and common-mode constraints.
- Check hardware claims: inspect the specific PCB for TVS, termination, isolators and isolated power before relying on its “protected” or “isolated” title.
- Close the purchasing details: footprint and soldering needs for bare ICs, header/connector format for modules, host board inclusion and actual selected HAT function.
Frequently asked questions
Can an SN65HVD230 chip run CAN communication by itself?
No. It is a bus transceiver, not a CAN protocol controller. Pair it with a compatible MCU CAN controller or an external controller such as an MCP2515 where appropriate.
Is an MCP2515 module automatically a CAN FD module?
No. The MCP2515 listings describe classic CAN capabilities. A CAN FD claim requires a verified FD-capable controller and suitable complete interface, not just a mixed seller headline.
Can I replace an SN65HVD230 board with an MCP2551 module?
Not blindly. Compare supply, host logic levels, pinout, control modes, bus ratings and board circuit for the selected products.
Does a CAN board with TVS protection have galvanic isolation?
No. TVS suppression and isolation are distinct features. Confirm a documented isolator and isolated supply on that exact selected board if isolation is required.
Is an RS485 CAN HAT choice the same as a 2-CH CAN HAT?
No. These are distinct selectable products; RS-485 and CAN have different physical and protocol requirements. Read the chosen Color option and board schematic.
Does “10pcs SN65HVD230 SN65HVD231” mean both chips ship?
Not necessarily. Many multi-model listings supply the selected device at the selected count. Check the actual option and packing list.
