Supercapacitors & Farad Capacitor Modules

Supercapacitors for short-duration energy storage

Supercapacitors, also called electric double-layer capacitors or ultracapacitors, store energy at capacitance values commonly expressed in farads (F). This collection includes low-voltage individual cells, compact 5.5 V button or coin-style V-, H- and C-type parts, combined capacitor modules, multi-cell automotive-labelled assemblies and small-value kits. They may suit appropriately engineered backup power, ride-through or pulse-support circuits, but a supercapacitor is not a battery, charger or automatic voltage regulator.

Match the selected construction

  • Individual cells: Listings offer options such as 2.7 V cells from fractions of a farad to hundreds of farads, as well as some 3 V and 3.7 V-labelled parts. Select the exact voltage and capacitance option; a higher F value is not evidence of the same physical size, current capability or endurance.
  • Compact backup parts: Some 5.5 V listings present 0.022 F, 0.047 F, 0.1 F, 0.22 F, 0.47 F, 1 F and larger options in V-, H- or C-type forms. Check the actual terminal orientation, pitch, footprint, height and polarity rather than assuming these letter codes describe a universal package standard.
  • Assemblies and kits: Listings include nominal 5.5 V combination types, 13.5 V/16 V automotive-labelled modules and assortments. A module's total voltage and capacitance cannot be inferred by simply multiplying single-cell values: series connections reduce effective capacitance, and voltage balance, protection and charging constraints matter. Confirm the assembly diagram and specifications.

Engineering selection steps

  1. Determine required hold-up time, load-current profile, permitted voltage drop and operating temperature; calculate usable energy over the allowed voltage window rather than using the label's F number alone.
  2. Check working voltage at each cell, initial and end-of-life ESR, maximum current, leakage/self-discharge, cycle life and charge/discharge limits against the precise datasheet. Never exceed a cell's rated voltage; use a suitable balancing and protective design for series stacks.
  3. Verify package diameter or body dimensions, terminal shape, mounting pattern, polarity, lead spacing, venting and thermal environment. A car audio display or automotive rectifier module is an assembled product, not a bare supercapacitor with a guaranteed specification for a different installation.

Important collection boundaries

Search-term overlap also brings conventional aluminum electrolytic capacitors described as “super low ESR” or “super audio”, CBB61/CBB65 motor-run capacitors, a radio variable capacitor and car-audio accessories into this collection. Their µF/pF ratings, dielectric and operating roles are distinct from farad-scale energy-storage supercapacitors. Some listings conflict on units, for example 0.47 F versus 0.47 µF; these differ by one million times. Confirm printed markings and the actual selected part before ordering. Brand and “original” claims need traceable evidence when provenance is important.

Buying checklist and FAQ

Specify cell or module, exact variant, F rating, per-cell and assembly voltage, ESR, leakage, operating temperature, terminal type, dimensions, balancing/protection needs, quantity and datasheet.

Can a 5.5 V part replace a 2.7 V cell? Not from voltage alone. Confirm capacitance, ESR, current, leakage, footprint and internal cell arrangement.

Can I connect cells in series for a higher-voltage system? Only with a design that respects each cell's voltage limits and provides appropriate balancing and protection.

Is every item here a supercapacitor? No. Inspect the selected listing; conventional electrolytics, motor capacitors and other accessories are also present.
