TL072 and TL074 JFET Op Amp ICs and Preamps
TL072 and TL074 operational amplifiers: select the actual circuit
Compare TL072 dual-channel and TL074 quad-channel JFET-input operational amplifier ICs in through-hole and surface-mount packages, alongside TL072-based instrument preamplifier boards, mixed-model IC selections, assorted component kits and a separate Class-D audio power-amplifier board. The products here do not all contain the same device. A multi-model title lists possible choices, not a promise that every model or the entire list arrives together. Read the selected variant and package before ordering. A loose op amp, populated guitar preamp and finished speaker-power stage have different functions, wiring and safety requirements.
TL072 versus TL074: channel count and footprint
TL072 family devices contain two op-amp channels, commonly offered here as TL072CP or TL072CN DIP-8 and TL072CDR SOP-8 options. TL074 family devices contain four channels and appear as TL074CN DIP-14 or TL074C, TL074CDR and TL074CDT SOP-14 options. A quad TL074 is not a drop-in replacement for a dual TL072: package size, pin count, signal routing and available amplifier channels differ. Verify the suffix, package drawing, pin-1 orientation and manufacturer datasheet for the part actually supplied. A ten-piece listing of TL074 SOP-14 is a pack of ICs, not a four-channel assembled board. Likewise, a default-title TL072 DIP-8 listing should not be assumed to include a preamp circuit, socket or power supply.
Both families are commonly considered where high input impedance is useful, for example an instrument pickup buffer, active filter, mixer, effects stage or analog signal conditioner. JFET inputs reduce input bias current demands compared with many bipolar-input architectures, but they do not remove offset, noise, leakage or PCB contamination concerns. An op amp amplifies the voltage difference between its inputs under feedback; useful closed-loop gain depends on the chosen resistor network and operating point. The name alone does not establish a low-noise figure, distortion limit or bandwidth of a finished design.
Design around the actual supply and signal range
Before choosing a TL072 or TL074, check the datasheet for allowable supply range, input common-mode range, output-voltage headroom, load drive, slew rate, gain-bandwidth product, noise and stability at the planned closed-loop gain. These devices should not be treated as universally rail-to-rail or assumed to accept a ground-level input on every single-supply configuration. For an AC audio signal powered from one positive rail, a circuit may establish a suitable mid-supply reference and input/output coupling; whether it does so depends on the assembled board, not on the IC name. A 12 V or 24 V number on a preamp listing describes the board's advertised supply arrangement and is not permission to apply that voltage to an arbitrary IC pin. Verify board polarity, regulation, maximum voltage, ground/reference arrangement and signal connections from the exact listing before energizing it.
High-input-impedance circuits are sensitive to source loading, cable capacitance, shielding and input bias/reference design. Gain is not free: raising it can reduce signal headroom and available bandwidth and increase output noise or clipping. A preamp designed for a guitar pickup is a line-level signal conditioner, not a speaker driver. Confirm the downstream audio input impedance and level, especially when feeding a sound interface, effects chain or power amplifier. Avoid using a seller's generic “10 times magnification” phrase as a verified gain for every board and source.
TL072 instrument preamp boards
Several items are described as TL072 high-impedance guitar or musical-instrument preamplifier boards with 12 V/24 V or single-supply wording. These are physical assembled boards rather than packets of loose TL072 chips. Their input connector, gain control, coupling capacitors, bias network and output format may differ even when titles are similar. Check whether the photographed board and the selected offer include a potentiometer, knob, cable or enclosure, and whether the stated supply is 12 V only, 12–24 V, or another documented configuration. Claims of increased loudness or improved tone depend on pickup, source level, gain setting, load and the rest of the signal chain; no uniform audio improvement is guaranteed. A listing that says “Single 12V 24V” may refer to a single positive supply, not a single-channel TL072 IC. Two internal amplifier sections can serve one signal chain, so distinguish circuit channels from IC channels and stereo outputs.
Related JFET-input families are options, not synonyms
Some selection pages offer TL061, TL062, TL064, TL071, TL072, TL074, TL081, TL082 and TL084 versions. These span single, dual and quad amplifier counts and different power, noise, speed and electrical trade-offs. On the 20-piece SOP-8 page, variants named TL081-SOP, TL072-SOP, TL082-SOP, TL061-SOP, TL071-SOP and TL062-SOP specify which IC family to buy; a TL072-SOP selection is not an assortment of all six. On the DIP page, select TL081CP, TL082CP, TL071CP, TL072CP, TL061CP or TL062CP deliberately. A TL064CN/TL074CN/TL084CN DIP-14 page similarly offers separate quad-part choices. Do not infer pin compatibility or matching bias/current/noise specifications solely from an identical package; read the precise suffix and operating conditions.
TL071 is a single amplifier and TL072 is dual, so a selected TL071CDR from a TL072CDR/TL062CDR page is not a two-channel TL072. The same SOP-8 selection page also lists TJA1042T, TJA1050T and TJA1051T, which are CAN-bus transceivers, not op amps. A CAN device in a similar package cannot replace a TL072. Check package markings and source documentation before installing parts on a populated PCB.
Multi-model ten-piece pages: variant is the purchase
Several product pages with titles listing TL072, TL074, NE555, CD4011, CD4017, 74HC595, TL494, L293D and other devices offer one selected model as a variant. TL072CP DIP-8 and TL074CN DIP-14 are the relevant op-amp choices; selecting CD4017BE instead buys a decade counter, L293D a motor-driver IC, NE555 a timer, LM393 a comparator, TL494 a PWM controller, and 74HC parts logic devices. “10 PCS” generally describes the listing's pack quantity, not ten of every title keyword. Compare the selected variant, pack quantity, package and checkout details. Similar-looking pages can have different option lists, including TL081CP and TL084CN, and must not be treated as interchangeable bundles.
A separate 100-piece assorted DIP-8 kit lists 10 pieces each of ten different named devices including TL072, TL062, ICL7660, 93C46, UC3843, MAX485, 24C64, LF353 and DS1302. That is a mixed kit, not 100 TL072 ICs. Another “9 Values” op-amp kit title also mentions TL062, TL064, TL082 and TL084 alongside LM358, LM324 and UA741, but its headline count and model list warrant confirmation of the actual per-model breakdown before relying on the stated total of 45 pieces. An assortment is useful for prototyping, not for specifying a production lot of one part number.
Speaker amplifier board containing a TL072 is not a TL072 IC pack
Two listings describe a dual-core TPA3255 stereo Class-D audio power amplifier board and mention TL072 in the board title. These are 19–50 V DC speaker-amplifier assemblies advertised with “600W+600W,” not small-signal TL072 preamp boards and not loose TL072/TL074 chips. The TL072, if fitted, may be part of the front-end signal path; verify the actual PCB assembly and schematic. Output power varies with supply voltage and current capacity, speaker impedance, thermal management, distortion threshold and measurement method. Do not assume the headline is continuous power at your load or that an included power supply or speaker protection is provided. Class-D bridge outputs and board power connections require their own product-specific instructions, not generic op-amp pin wiring.
Practical selection sequence
- Choose the function: replacement IC, guitar pickup preamp, mixed bench kit or speaker-driving board.
- For an IC, decide two TL072 channels versus four TL074 channels, then select DIP-8/DIP-14 for through-hole sockets or the specified SOP/SOIC surface-mount footprint. Verify the exact suffix, temperature grade and pin map.
- For a substitute family, compare power rails, input common-mode limits, bias current, offset, noise, gain-bandwidth, slew rate, output swing and capacitive-load stability at the intended gain. Same pin count does not prove drop-in behavior.
- For a preamp module, check power input and polarity, signal reference, pickup/source impedance, maximum input level, gain range, output coupling and included accessories.
- For kits and multi-model pages, explicitly read the selected variant and number of pieces rather than assuming the title lists everything shipped.
- For the TPA3255 assembly, size the DC supply and loudspeaker to the board's documented operating conditions and provide adequate cooling; do not use a loose TL072 data sheet as its full-board specification.
Frequently asked questions
Is TL074 simply a faster TL072? No. The defining difference here is four channels versus two and a 14-pin versus 8-pin package; electrical performance must be checked by exact part and suffix.
Can I plug TL074CN into a TL072CP DIP-8 socket? No. Their package and pin count differ, and the host PCB would need a different layout.
Can I use a TL072 on a 5 V single-supply board? Do not assume so. Validate the exact device's supply rating, input common-mode span and output swing at the planned bias and load; choose an appropriate low-voltage rail-to-rail part if necessary.
Does “TL072/TL074/NE555” mean one mixed package? Usually these multi-model listings expose separate selectable variants. Check the selected option and actual quantity. The explicitly described assorted kit is a different product.
Does a TL072 guitar preamp power a speaker? No. It conditions a small audio signal for a downstream stage; speaker power requires a suitable power amplifier.
Is TL072CDR the same physical part as TL072CP? Both refer to TL072-family dual op amps, but their package/ordering suffixes and mounting requirements differ. Check exact markings, footprint and the applicable manufacturer datasheet.
Does the TPA3255 board guarantee 600 W per channel? No. The listing headline alone does not establish continuous delivered power under your supply, load, distortion and cooling conditions.
Are seller claims of original chips or certification independently verified here? No. Confirm provenance and any relevant documentation for the selected lot; this collection does not certify chip origin or performance.
