Toroidal Inductors, Chokes and Magnetic Cores

Toroidal inductors and related magnetic parts

A toroidal inductor is a winding around a ring-shaped magnetic core. In this collection, wound single-coil 5026, 65125, 80125 and 90125-style options are offered alongside larger flat-wire PFC or inverter filter coils, common-mode ring chokes, assortment kits and separate ferrite or FeSiAl/sendust cores. A few related search results are current transformers, a toroidal power transformer, a wireless charging coil, straight-rod coils and non-toroidal I-core inductors. Those are not interchangeable with a wound single-coil toroid; identify the selected product and its function before ordering.

Choose by electrical function, not just ring shape

  • Single-winding power toroids: The 5026, 65125 and 90125-style wound listings span different µH values, claimed current options and horizontal or vertical mounting. A ring shape can help contain magnetic flux, but alone does not establish efficiency or low EMI. For a DC-DC, PFC or differential-mode filter, check inductance at the actual operating current, saturation behavior, RMS heating, DC resistance (DCR), core loss, wire size, footprint and temperature.
  • Common-mode toroidal chokes: Coupled windings are intended to suppress common-mode noise. Listings may specify mH, current, turns and winding orientation; confirm winding count, common-mode impedance versus frequency, differential-mode leakage, insulation and lead layout for the exact part. A two-winding choke is not a direct substitute for a one-winding energy-storage inductor.
  • Bare cores: Listings include ferrite, Ni-Zn, carbonyl iron, iron-powder and sendust/FeSiAl rings in different outer diameter, inner diameter and height combinations. These are materials and shapes for winding a design, not finished coils with a fixed µH rating. Core AL or an nH/turns² notation is a core parameter measured under stated conditions; the finished inductance depends on turns, material, magnetic bias and frequency. A listing's informal “ferrite” wording does not establish that a powder core is ferrite.
  • Transformers and specialty coils: A toroidal transformer transfers energy between windings and must be matched by its actual input, output, insulation and VA ratings. A current transformer is a measurement component and must be assessed by ratio, burden and rated current; a wireless charging coil needs a matching inductive power design. None should be bought as a generic power choke because “inductor” appears in the title.
  • Mixed assortments: Kits sometimes mix toroids, axial color-ring, I-core or SMD inductors. Check the selected kit contents and count; a multi-value assortment is not a single 100 µH part.

Toroid selection checklist

  1. Identify a finished single-winding inductor, coupled common-mode choke, bare core, transformer or charging coil from the actual variant and circuit schematic.
  2. For a wound inductor, match the specified inductance and unit (1 mH = 1,000 µH), then verify tolerance, current-dependent inductance, saturation current, RMS/temperature-rise current, DCR and AC loss. A value such as 100 µH / 10 A in a shared title does not certify every option's test conditions.
  3. For a bare core, confirm material grade, permeability or AL at the relevant frequency, physical OD × ID × height, allowable flux density and winding window. Do not assume the same-size ferrite, sendust and iron-powder cores behave alike.
  4. Check horizontal versus vertical lead placement, winding count, board clearance, mechanical fixation, insulation requirements and selected pack size. An example converter or inverter named in a listing is not proof of equipment compatibility or certification.

FAQ

Can a 47 µH 5026 toroid replace any 47 µH 65125 part? No. Current, DCR, core material, size, mounting and losses may differ.

Is an unwound ring a 100 µH inductor? No. Inductance is a property of a specified winding on that core under defined conditions.

Are a ring-shaped common-mode choke and a toroidal transformer the same thing? No. They serve different electrical roles and require different winding and safety specifications.
