BN0080/085 is a 9-axis System-in-Package (SiP) that facilitates rapid development of sensor-enabled augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), robotics, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Co-developed by Bosch and Hillcrest Labs, it features high-performance accelerometers, magnetometers, and gyroscopes, utilizing a low-power 32-bit ARM Cortex MO+ MCU in a compact package. Hillcrest's Freespace? sensor hub software is pre-integrated on BN0080/085, providing superior 9-axis and 6-axis motion tracking, enabling exciting sensor applications in various consumer and IoT products.
BN0080/085 provides application-specific configuration, functionality, and performance in a compact turnkey assembly, benefiting OEMs by reducing time to market, shortening development time, and lowering BOM costs, while also delivering the highest precision and quality.
VRIMU utilizes the impressive BN0080 IMU. This IC features a combination of three-axis accelerometer/gyroscope/magnetometer, runs powerful algorithms alongside the ARM Cortex-M0+, and generates precise rotation vector headers, making it highly suitable for VR and other heading applications, with a static rotation error of 2 degrees or less. This is what we've been waiting for: all sensor data is combined and drift-corrected into meaningful, accurate IMU information. The IC is designed to be implemented in Android-based phones, processing all the calculations required for virtual reality goggles using only your phone. The sensor functionality is extremely powerful and the power consumption is also sophisticated. A 12C-based library is provided, offering rotation vectors (most people want to read from the IMU), as well as acceleration, gyroscope, and magnetometer readings, step counts, activity classifiers (such as cycling), and calibration.
VRIMU has developed a demonstration processing application to illustrate how the motion of an IMU can accurately manipulate 3D objects using the quaternion output of the IMU.
If 12C is not your first choice for communication, the sensor can also communicate via SPI and UART! If you are using UART, we recommend using Serial Basic for easy connection. This version uses an on-board 32kHz crystal, which improves accuracy and provides more precise timestamps.

Application. Using the VR system equipped with BN0085, even if the controller is not within the field of view of the system's camera, it can still benefit from the enhanced image stability brought by the more precise calibration between the controller and the head-mounted display. BN0085 inherits all the same functions of its predecessor, BN0080, which is now widely used in VR
, AR, 3D audio, robots, and IoT devices. It will leverage Hillcrest Labs' high-performance, proprietary Mo

Packaged in a single enclosure, the BN0085 offers unique sensor fusion, motion tracking, and exclusive application features to support a range of consumer and industrial products utilizing sensors. The latest design of the BNO085 is aimed at providing precise dynamic tracking for VR controllers in both internal and external systems of VR, AR, and 3D audio headsets.
The improvements to BN0085 designed for VR systems include:
Improved dynamic tracking through enhancements to both internal and external camera systems:
Significantly reduce latency errors, ensuring the frame rate of the controller matches that of the head-mounted display;
The operational effects between the dual control handles in the dual control handle system are closely synchronized
Even outside the camera's field of view, the sensor can track the rotational movement of one or more control handles and stably output the image.
Compared to the previous generation product BN0085, it features low power consumption and compact size, while providing low latency, 1KHz sampling rate, stable directional output, and accurate dynamic tracking capabilities. Developers and system integrators benefit from faster time to market, shortened development time, reduced BOM costs, as well as the highest accuracy and product quality. Currently, in the VR field, two well-known brands, 3Glasses and ANTVR, have used HillcrestLabs' BNO085 sensor module to provide their customers with a better VR experience.
