CAN-BUS is a common industrial bus. Because of its long distance transmission, medium communication speed, and high reliability, it is often used in modern machine tools and automotive diagnostic buses. Thanks to CAN-BUS, manufacturers can more easily hack their cars. To interact with cars more conveniently, we released the CAN-BUS Shield. It uses the MCP2515 CAN-BUS controller and MCP2551 CAN transceiver, providing Arduino / Seeeduino CAN-BUS functionality.
Previously we made two versions of the CAN-BUS Shield, V1.0 and V1.2. They were both expansion boards widely loved by our users. To make it better, a few months ago we conducted a survey on the CAN-BUS Shield V1.2 and received many valuable suggestions (thanks to all users who replied). So we decided to update it. Here it is – CAN-BUS Shield V2.
CAN-BUS Shield V2 still uses MCP2515 as the CAN-BUS controller and MCP2551 as the CAN transceiver. Nevertheless, there are many updates. First and most importantly, the pin arrangement of OBD-II or CAN standard pins can be selected via jumpers on the DB9 interface; the default pin arrangement is OBD-II. Secondly, we added a TF card slot for data storage, and the CS pin can be set to D4 or D5. By switching the jumpers on the back, the INT pin can be set to D2 or D3. If you want to use more than two CAN-BUS Shields, you need to cut P1 pad. In V2, we moved the P1 solder pad from the front to the rear of the shield for easier cutting and soldering. Integrated, with more custom options.
Considering that D0 / D1 pins are usually used for downloading code, we changed the serial Grove connector to pins A0 / A1. The I2C tree connector was also changed to the more reasonable standard SDA / SCL pins instead of the previous A4 / A5. Both groove connectors are changed to horizontal rather than perpendicular to the shield, making it easier to connect to other groove modules.
Alternative Options:
If your project space is limited, here is a serial CAN-BUS module. It has the full functionality of the CAN bus. The serial CAN-BUS gives your Arduino or other MCU the ability to communicate with CAN-BUS, for example, to hack into your vehicle. This Grove CAN-BUS module is controlled by UART. This means that if your MCU has a UART interface, you can use this serial CAN bus.
