Product Introduction:
The HUSB238 USB PD sink chip is incredibly practical. It allows you to set the desired PD voltage and current using jumpers (effectively resistor selections) or dynamically query and configure settings via I²C. We’ve built an excellent Adafruit USB Type-C PD breakout board around the HUSB238, making configuration and integration easy—no soldering of tiny resistors required.
This board is ideal for use with USB Type-C wall adapters that can deliver multiple voltages (5V, 9V, 12V, 15V, 18V, and 20V standard). Once plugged into a USB-C cable, the HUSB238 negotiates PD requests and commands over the CC lines. For example, you can query available voltages and then select the highest one—or pick a specific voltage if your project demands it.
If your project needs significantly more power than 5V@2A, this breakout is a game-changer: it can deliver up to 20V@5A—yes, you get 100W over USB-C! And if needed, you can step that down to get high-current 5V or 12V. Alternatively, use it to convert a DC or battery‑powered device to USB‑C power.
Jumper configuration is straightforward: by default, it’s hardwired for 5V@1A (the initial output any USB‑C port provides). Cut the 5V jumper and solder the 9V, 12V, 15V, 18V, or 20V jumper to select the voltage-setting resistor. You can also select the desired current (from 2A to 3A), though we’ve found this isn’t strictly necessary—you can always draw whatever current the adapter can supply. No microcontroller or computer required!
I²C configuration is a bit more challenging. Because the output voltage can be as high as 20V, there is no onboard regulator or pull‑up resistors. Connect the board to a microcontroller or single‑board computer that has its own power supply (or one that can tolerate up to 20V if you plan to select that voltage), and attach I²C pull‑up resistors to your desired logic level. Then use the Arduino library and example code to query the USB‑C PD power source for available voltages and currents, and dynamically choose the voltage you need. When using I²C configuration, the jumper settings are active at startup until an I²C command is issued.
