Great news — we now have an ultra-small breakout board for the ICS43434 I2S MEMS microphone.
Similar to ‘classic’ analog microphones, MEMS mics detect sound and convert it into a voltage signal, but in a much smaller and thinner form factor.
This microphone is purely digital, with no analog output.
The I2S MEMS mic is a compact, low-cost sensor with a frequency response of approximately 50Hz – 15kHz, ideal for general-purpose audio recording and sound detection.
The chip includes a built-in low-pass filter that cuts off frequencies above 24kHz.
Adding audio input to basic microcontrollers is easy with analog mics.
However, as you move to more advanced MCUs and single-board computers, you may find limited analog inputs, or want to avoid noise common in analog microphone systems.
Beyond 8-bit MCUs, digital audio peripherals like I2S become widely available — which is where this I2S MEMS microphone breakout featuring the TDK ICS43434 comes in.
Instead of analog output, it uses three digital pins:
- Clock
- Data
- Left/Right (Word Select)
When connected to a microcontroller or computer, the I2S controller drives the clock and word select pins at high frequency and reads digital data directly from the microphone — no analog conversion required!
This is a single microphone element.
You can assign it to either the left or right channel by connecting the Select pin to VCC or GND.
For stereo audio, simply use two microphones: share the clock, WS, and data lines, with one SEL pin tied low and the other high.
No firmware or driver configuration is needed, and you get 24-bit digital output immediately.
The microphone has a bottom sound port, so ensure there is an opening on the bottom facing the sound source you wish to capture.
It is a 1.6–3.6V device only and is not compatible with 5V logic (which is typical for I2S devices anyway).
Many entry-level microcontroller boards do not support I2S, so please confirm interface compatibility before use.
This microphone works best with Cortex‑M series chips such as SAMD21, SAMD51, ESP32, RP2040, RP2350, and single-board computers like Raspberry Pi.
