Listen to this good news - we now have a digital audio amplifier to break through the board and work with Raspberry Pi very well! If you are looking for a simple and low cost method to get digital sound files, then the MAX08357 I2S Amp Breakout is for you. It uses standard I2S digital audio input, not only can be decoded into analog, you can also put it directly into the speaker. Perfect to increase the compact sound, it takes 2 break (I2S DAC + Amp) and combines them into one.
I2S (not to be confused with I2C) Pass the audio data in the digital sound protocol used on the board. Many high-end chips and processors manage all audio in digital I2S format. Then, in to input or output data, use three or four pins (data input, data output, bit clock and left and right channel selection). Typically, for an audio device, a DAC chip will use I2S and convert it to a simulation that can drive the headset.
This small mono amplifier is incredibly powerful - capable of delivering 4 watts of power to a 4 ohm impedance speaker (5V power, 10% THD). -chip internal D-class controller, can run from 2.7V-5.5VDC. Since the amplifier is a Class D, it is very efficient and is ideal for portable and battery-powered projects. It has built heat and overcurrent , but we can hardly say it gets hot.
The audio input is the I2S standard and can use 3.3V or 5V logic data. The outputs are "bridged" - which means they are connected directly to the output, not connected to ground. The output is ~ 300KHz square wave PWM, then the speaker coil "average" - did not hear the high frequency. All this means that you can not connect the output to another amplifier, it should drive the speaker directly.
There is a gain pin that can be manipulated to change the gain. By default, the amplifier will give you 9dB of gain. The gain pin can be set to 3dB, 6dB, 9dB, 12dB, or 15dB by connecting a pull-up or pull-down resistor or a direct connection.
The ShutDown / Mode pin can be used to turn the chip off or set the I2S audio channel to a speaker. By default, the amplifier will output (L + R) / 2 stereo mix into monaural output. By adding a resistor, you can change it to just output or just output it
For Raspberry Pi, Zero and any other controllers or computers with I2S audio output
