Product Overview

Many modern sensors, displays, flash memory cards, and modules operate at 3.3V, while development boards like Arduino and Basic Stamp use 5V logic. To safely interface 3.3V components with 5V systems, level shifting is often required.

While resistive voltage dividers can be used, they may introduce signal skew and hard‑to‑debug issues, especially at higher speeds. Dedicated level‑shifting logic (e.g., 4050 or 74LVX245 series) works well, but those devices are unidirectional and can complicate bidirectional bus designs.

The TXB0104 solves this problem. It is a bidirectional, auto‑direction‑sensing level translator that supports a wide range of voltage levels (e.g., 1.2V–3.6V on one side and 1.65V–5.5V on the other). It automatically detects the direction of data flow, making it ideal for mixed‑voltage interfaces.

Note on usage: The TXB0104 is not recommended for I²C buses (due to strong pull‑ups interfering with direction sensing) or control lines with high capacitance. If external pull‑up resistors are required, use values of at least 50kΩ. The internal pull‑ups on AVR/Arduino boards (~100kΩ) are acceptable.

Because the TXB0104 is a specialized bidirectional translator, its outputs are not designed to drive LEDs or long cables. It is best used for signal‑level translation between logic chips on a breadboard or PCB.
