Product Introduction

The DS3231 is a highly accurate, temperature-compensated Real Time Clock (RTC) with an integrated crystal and TCXO – all in one compact, low-power package. Unlike conventional RTC modules that rely on external 32 kHz crystals (which are prone to frequency drift from temperature changes), this device embeds the timing crystal directly inside the chip, alongside a built-in temperature sensor. The sensor actively adjusts the clock frequency, adding or removing ticks as needed to maintain exceptional long-term accuracy, even under varying ambient conditions.

This breakout board makes integration effortless. It includes onboard support circuitry for both 3.3V and 5V logic levels, so it works seamlessly with a wide range of microcontrollers, single-board computers, and development platforms. Communication is via the standard I2C bus – simply connect power, ground, and the two data lines.

For even greater convenience, we’ve equipped the board with STEMMA QT compatible connectors (Qwiic-friendly) that allow plug-and-play I2C daisy-chaining without soldering. A CR1220 coin cell holder on the back provides battery backup, ensuring years of reliable timekeeping even when main power is removed. (Coin cell not included.)

The board comes fully assembled and tested, with a small strip of header pins included. You can solder the headers for breadboard use or solder wires directly for a permanent installation.

Ideal for data logging, clocks, scheduled events, and any project that demands trustworthy, drift-free time awareness.
