The AS3935 is a programmable lightning storm distance estimation sensor capable of detecting potential and approaching lightning activity in the vicinity. An embedded lightning algorithm monitors input signals while suppressing potential spurious interference.

The sensor provides microcontrollers operating in high electromagnetic noise environments with information on ambient electromagnetic noise levels via an internal background electromagnetic noise generator. The sensor alerts users to thunderstorm activity within a 40-kilometer radius. It can estimate the distance to the storm front down to 1 km and detects both cloud-to-ground and intracloud (cloud-to-cloud) lightning flashes. It can operate in power-down mode, listen mode, and signal verification mode.
